RTÉ News has announced the appointment of journalist, Shane Ó Curraighín, as the new Northwest Correspondent for the public broadcaster.

Shane will be reporting and providing analysis on RTÉ News platforms on social, economic, cultural and political developments on all aspects of life in the Northwest region including all of Donegal, Leitrim and Sligo.

Mr Ó Curraighín joined RTÉ as a multimedia journalist in 2016, reporting across television, radio and digital platforms, including 7LÁ, Nuacht RTÉ, Nuacht TG4, RTÉ News and RTÉ Online.

He has covered a wide range of major news stories across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Over the past three years, he has worked on 7LÁ, TG4’s current affairs programme produced by RTÉ, reporting extensively and providing analysis on political, economic and social developments and public affairs.

Prior to joining 7LÁ, Shane returned to live in the Northwest in 2020, reporting across counties Leitrim, Sligo, Donegal and Mayo for Nuacht RTÉ and Nuacht TG4.

He previously worked as a video journalist with Below the Radar TV in Belfast and as a lecturer with Dublin City University.

Shane began his broadcasting career as an intern in Nuacht RTÉ/TG4 while undertaking an undergraduate degree.

Shane is from Teileann in the Donegal Gaeltacht and lives in Donegal Town with his wife and baby daughter.

“As somebody who grew up in the region, I am delighted to be taking up the role of Northwest Correspondent. I am honoured to have been given the opportunity to continue the great work that Eileen Magnier did over the past four decades.

"I’m looking forward to covering the stories that matter to the people of Donegal, Leitrim and Sligo.

"The impact of the defective blocks crisis, challenges in healthcare, housing, infrastructure, fishing and farming are just some of the important issues I look forward to covering. I also look forward to reporting on the positive stories and triumphs in the Northwest.

"Tá mé ag súil go mór le scéalta mhuintir an iarthuaiscirt a chur os comhair an phobail.”
