Clubbers: Sounds Signature Party is a big draw at The Savoy
There are good club nights in Cork this weekend.
Of course, the big event is the Sound Signature Records party in the Savoy on Saturday, May 9, complete with a four-hour set from label boss Theo Parrish, enough time for the revered DJ to take the audience on a variety of journeys, but fans of those genres can enjoy an appetiser the night before when cosmic disco party starters Funksmack celebrate their second birthday.
With a deep love for disco, house, funk and soul, the Funksmack nights are a playful, high-energy journey – selecting obscure rarities to full-blown classics and pop bangers. In their time they have hosted the likes of Ricky Chong, Sam Don and really signalled their crate-digging cred by bringing David Mancuso collaborator and acolyte Colleen “Cosmo” Murphy to Cork.
On Friday, May 8 their special guest is Cleveland Mike – a promoter, artist manager and DJ with over 25 years of experience in the music industry. I believe his real name is Mike Cleveland, which is not as glamorous sounding. It would be like if Killer Mike was called Killer Mike only because his surname is Killer. But I’m sure this Mike’s sets are all killer no filler.
As a DJ, Cleveland Mike spins a diverse selection of records from house, disco, funk, soul, reggae, Afro and Brazilian. Mike’s deep knowledge of music and love for the dancefloor has given him the opportunity to share the stage with some big names, including Don Letts, Norman Jay, DJ Sneak, Andy Smith, Darryn Jones, Rahaan and Pablo at the Dublin Disco All Dayer.
The party will be kicking off at Dali on Lavitt’s Quay tonight at 9pm and will run until 1am. €10 on the door. Expect hard dancing, and even some cake!
And here’s one from the It’s A Small World, Isn’t It Department, the aforementioned Pablo Fatty Fatty from the Dublin Disco All Dayer is DJ-ing at, and a co-promoter of, the Sound Signature Party at the Savoy on Saturday. Also, Cleveland Mike is part of Kilkenny’s Mission DJs crew alongside Shane Tobler, who plays with recently minted Sound Signature artists East West Collective. So don’t be surprised if you see some Funksmack revellers still going at it there.
Meanwhile, bringing a much harder attitude to clubbing, CORK HOTBOXX, the techno cage rave, returns to the Pav on Saturday, May 9. Featuring Irish based Spaniard GØNA, PXLO and Lady Asiu.
For those unfamiliar with etiquette, HOTBOXX is a 360º boiler room setup rave with a Mad Max cage in the middle of the techno dance floor.
At any one time there is a maximum of seven people (including the DJ) allowed inside the cage. Patrons are asked to ensure they are constantly dancing/raving with high energy. Bystanders and those bumping into the DJ will be removed.
The music will be raw, dark, industrial, bochka, hardstyle, schranz, rawstyle, hardcore, hard techno. Brutal hard techno all night long! Wear your best bondage/fetish fashion. Not for the faint-hearted. Doors 10pm.
Also on Saturday, May 9, Connolly’s of Leap host Dublin duo Long Island Sound, who bring their immersive, emotionally charged electronic sound to West Cork for a special all-night-long performance.
Known for their euphoric yet introspective take on electronic music, the pair craft deep, melodic journeys that balance warmth, drive, and late-night intensity.
Tickets €21.50. Doors at 8pm
