What's on Cork's stages this week?

THE great Phil Coulter appears at the Opera House tonight (Thursday, October 5) - why not try your luck for tickets?

The White Horse Guitar Club tomorrow night  (Friday, October 6) is certainly sold out, but a few seats were still available at time of going to press for Shirley Valentine on Saturday night, with Norma Sheahan as the frustrated housewife dreaming of a better life.

Next Tuesday night, there is an opportunity to hear The Magic Flute, abridged and semi-staged, with John O’Brien conducting, Rory Dunne, Kelli-Ann Masterson, and Dean Power performing with a host of Irish and international soloists, all accompanied by Cork Opera House Concert Orchestra, in Mozart’s final classic piece.

Popular music of another kind next Thursday when Ronan Collins sings the great numbers made famous by Joe Dolan.

Tomorrow night at Everyman, the Irish Gamelan Orchestra (IGO) joins Mel Mercier in Guiding Bells, a concert to celebrate his 30-year contribution to music and education in Ireland.

A stellar line-up of guests, including singer Iarla Ó Lionáird, dancer Colin Dunne, cellist Kate Ellis, fiddle player Tara Breen, saxophonist Nick Roth and West Cork Ukulele Orchestra, will join Mel and the IGO to perform music from their album The Three Forges as well as new arrangements of music by Schubert (Der Leiermann) and Purcell (Dido’s Lament). 8pm start.

That’s followed on Saturday night by Lisa O’Neill who performs her biggest show in Cork to date following the release of her acclaimed album All of This Is Chance on the Rough Trade label last February.

And on Sunday, we have a delightful tribute to one of the greatest singing stars when the ever-popular Everyman Sunday Songbook presents Sweet Caroline - The Neil Diamond Story. At Graffiti Theatre this Saturday, Humans: A Robot Musical is specially aimed at younger theatre -goers aged 8+. Written by John McCarthy and directed by Niall Cleary, it’s a delightfully funny story about three humanoid robots, one quite robotic human, and a bunch of catchy original songs. 11am and 2pm shows. Presented in association with Everyman, you can book through that theatre.

Running at Cork Arts Theatre is a witty comedy of ageism, Sexy Laundry. After 25 years of marriage, Alice and Henry have hit an intimate wasteland. Exploring fantasies from leather to lace, and the odd toy, they portray every couple’s desire to grow together but keep a piece of themselves and try to stay at least somewhat sexy. This Sunday at the Glen Theatre in Banteer, Gerry Guthrie and his country band are on stage at 8pm. Winner of numerous awards, Guthrie is as popular in Scotland and England as he is in Ireland.

The Glen Theatre has launched its autumn and winter programme so ensure you get these in your diaries. The drama group One-Act Festival dates in October are still being finalised, but Friday next week, October 13, brings the evergreen Johnny McEvoy, while on October 27 we have A Night at the Theatre with Groucho.
