County title only the beginning for ambitious Nemo

Cork champions will hope to avoid a repeat of their frustrating exit to Clonmel Commercials four years ago as they prepare to launch another bid for Munster honours

For many clubs, winning a county championship represents the end goal.

For Nemo Rangers, it is merely the beginning of the next challenge.

The Cork champions return to Munster action this weekend when they face Tipperary winners Loughmore-Castleiney at Páirc Uí Rinn in the quarter-final, but if there is one lesson from recent history, it is that county success counts for little if it is not followed by a meaningful provincial run.

Nemo have never measured themselves solely on what they achieve within Cork. Their history and tradition have been built on competing with the best teams in Munster and beyond, and that expectation remains as strong as ever.

It is why the memory of 2022 still stings.

Having dethroned St Finbarr's to reclaim the Andy Scannell Cup that year, Nemo entered the Munster campaign carrying significant momentum. There was genuine belief that the side could make an impact provincially and potentially challenge for honours.

Instead, their campaign fizzled out before it ever truly got started.

A disappointing quarter-final defeat to Clonmel Commercials down the Páirc brought their season to an abrupt halt. Nemo never reached the levels expected of them and exited the championship.

The result served as a reminder that winning Cork only earns a place at the provincial table. What happens next is what often defines how a season is ultimately remembered.

Nobody inside the club is likely to need reminding of that this week.

While there was understandable delight at regaining the county title by defeating St Finbarr's last Sunday week, attention quickly shifted towards Munster. The celebrations could only last so long before focus turned to the next objective.

That mindset has long been a hallmark of Nemo Rangers.

The club's greatness has been forged through a relentless pursuit of success. Munster titles, All-Ireland campaigns and landmark victories are woven throughout its history. Players who wear the jersey understand the standards that have been set by previous generations.

As a result, simply collecting another county championship is rarely viewed as mission accomplished.

This year's team has every reason to believe it can make a provincial impact.

Yet confidence alone guarantees nothing at this level.

Loughmore-Castleiney arrive in Cork as worthy Tipperary champions after their two-point county final win over Clonmel Commercials. The Mid Tipperary outfit has long been regarded as one of the strongest dual clubs in Munster and will travel expecting to test Nemo all the way.
