Douglas U16s power past Ballincollig in second half to land Premier 1 football title

Douglas claimed the Rebel Óg Premier 1 U16 football championship title in Bishopstown on Thursday night, proving too strong for Ballincollig and sealing a fully deserved seven‑point victory.

It was a badly needed lift for the club after the disappointment of their Premier Senior hurlers’ relegation last weekend. From early on, Douglas carried more threat in attack, driven by the outstanding Conor Crowley, who finished with an impressive 0-8.

If their shooting had been a shade more composed, the margin might have been even wider. 

They led by a point at the interval and restricted Ballincollig to just three second‑half scores. Their defensive unit, anchored superbly by Bobby O’Leary and Emmet Cronin, was rock solid throughout.

Crowley opened Douglas’ account from a free, though they could have been further ahead.

Ballincollig were more clinical in the early stages, with a Shay O’Brien free and a two‑point free from Cork minor Evan Stack helping them into a 0-3 to 0-1 lead after 11 minutes. Jack O’Sullivan added another point, while Alan Jozefowski threatened a goal.

Douglas responded well, kicking two of the next three points, with captain Cillian McAuliffe influential around the middle. Both defences were on top as Ballincollig held a two‑point advantage approaching half-time.

Crowley and Ben Murphy levelled matters before Cian Lehane nudged Douglas ahead, 0-6 to 0-5 at the break.

Douglas carried that momentum into the second half. Lehane added another free, though their wayward finishing remained an Achilles heel.

Shay O’Brien steadied Ballincollig with a much‑needed point to leave it 0-7 to 0-6 after 36 minutes.

Lehane and a Crowley two‑point free pushed Douglas four clear in a half disrupted by injuries. Another Shay O’Brien free kept Ballincollig in touch, and Jozefowski was again unlucky not to find the net.

Stack cut the gap to two with seven minutes left, 0-10 to 0-8, but Douglas were not for turning.

Crowley added three more scores, including a lovely free, and Cillian McCarthy finished the job with a pair of white flags as Douglas closed out a composed and convincing win.
