Glanmire defeat Mayfield with late two-pointer but bow out of Seandún JAFC

Glanmire 1-16 (1-3-10) Mayfield 1-15 (1-1-13)

Glanmire completed their programme in the AOS Security Seandún Junior A Football Championship on a winning note, as they defeated Mayfield, with a last gasp two-pointer at Ballinlough. 

This result puts Mayfield through to a preliminary semi-final on scoring differences. Glanmire are eliminated.

Glanmire got the winning score courtesy of a two-pointer from play by Gerry O’Callaghan, three minutes into stoppage time.

In this closely contested game, Glanmire enjoyed a three-point advantage midway through the opening half, but conceded a two-pointer from a free and a goal just before the interval. Glanmire converted four placed balls after the interval. Mayfield replied with five points from play.

Mayfield’s Dan Lucey and Dylan O’Donovan traded points with Glanmire’s Art Marron. Naoise Marron converted the game’s first free from outside the Mayfield 40-metre arc, to give Glanmire a 0-3 to 0-2 advantage.

James Murphy increased the margin to two points with a point from play, but Mayfield responded with a pointed free by Dan Lucey. Eddie Scanlan also converted a 45.

Glanmire were awarded a penalty midway through the opening half. Gerry O’Callaghan drilled to ball to the net, to give Glanmire a three-point lead.

Both sides traded three points apiece, before Mayfield seized the initiative. Shane O’Donovan scored a point from play, which was followed by a two-point free by Ronan O’Keeffe.

Lucey capitalized on a defensive error by Glanmire to score Mayfield’s goal. Mayfield led 1-8 to 1-7 at half-time.

Glanmire made the better start to the second half. Art Marron scored a point from play and O’Callaghan converted a 45.

Dave O’Neill replied with a point for Mayfield, 12 minutes into the second half. Persistent fouling was to prove costly for Mayfield in the final quarter, as Glanmire converted three frees.

James Murphy got Glanmire’s second two-pointer before the scene was set for a dramatic finish.
