Former Cork City Mark O'Mahony joins Burton Albion on loan

Corkman Mark O'Mahony has sealed his third loan move from Brighton and Hove Albion, joining League One outfit Burton Albion before last Tuesday's night’s deadline.

The 21-year-old will be part of Gary Bowyer’s squad for the rest of the season, beginning with Wednesday's visit of Wimbledon to the Pirelli Stadium.

The striker has made four appearances for Brighton since departing Cork City in 2023 but the majority of three years in England has been spent gaining experience on loan elsewhere.

The former Ireland U21 striker scored three goals in 13 games during a temporary 2024 stint at Portsmouth before injury curbed his impact while on loan for the second half of last season at Reading.

"We're really pleased to have Mark with us for the season," Bowyer said. 

"It's great to add another attacking option to our squad, we look forward to working with him and continuing his development."

The forward arrives having spent the first half of the 2025/26 campaign on loan at fellow Sky Bet League One side Reading, where he made 16 appearances for the Royals before returning to the Amex Stadium.

Sporting Director Richard Dorman added: “Mark will be a valuable addition to our squad for the season. He already has valuable EFL experience from his loan spells at Portsmouth and Reading, and we’re looking forward to seeing him come in, contribute goals and make an impact. 

"He’ll have the support of Gary and the rest of the coaching staff as he settles in and continues to progress.” 

Born in Cork, Ireland, O’Mahony started his journey in the academy at Cork City and made his senior debut in the Irish Premier Division at the age of 17.

After making 13 appearances for ‘The Rebel City’, he was brought to England to play for Brighton & Hove Albion. 

Following an impress 2023/24 campaign with their under-21’s side, where he lined up alongside new signing Caylan Vickers, the Irish forward made his Premier League debut in the 1-1 draw away at Burnley in April 2024.

Three more first team appearances followed, before the youngster joined John Mousinho’s Portsmouth side in Sky Bet Championship for 2024/25. He scored three times in 13 appearances during his time at Pompey, before going in search of more first team football with Reading last season.

O’Mahony is also a Republic of Ireland youth international. Since making his debut in March 2024 against San Marino, he has been capped on 15 occasions, including a 3-2 win over Sweden under-21’s where he set up Jamie Mullins’ opener and scored the match winning goal.

Elsewhere, Republic of Ireland midfielder Aoibhe Brennan has joined Women's Super League side Manchester City from Bohemians, in a move flagged by the Irish Examiner last month.

The youngster earned her first senior call-up for the Ireland squad in April but injury prevented her reporting for the pair of World Cup qualifiers against Poland.

Her form for Bohs saw her nominated for the PFA Ireland Women's Young Player of the Year Award last season.

"This is a really special moment for me and a really good opportunity that I hope I take with both hands.

"Every girl dreams about becoming a professional footballer and I am delighted I have got that opportunity. Getting over there is one thing, but staying over there is another.

"I wouldn't be where I am without Bohs. I want to thank everyone at the club so much for the support they have shown me throughout my time here."
