SAFC: Gary Holland key as Bishopstown aim to respond against Kilshannig

Bishopstown will hope that Saturday’s meeting with Kilshannig in Mallow (6.30pm) is one of those steadying occasions in the McCarthy Insurance Group SAFC.

They didn’t get the start they wanted in Group 3 last month against Éire Óg, but even in that one-point defeat there were signs of what can still be built. 

One of those signs was the form of Gary Holland, who kicked 0-3 and carried himself with the same assurance he showed earlier this year with the Cork U20s under Ray Keane.

Holland has always been a tidy, composed footballer. Nothing about his game is rushed. He moves well, takes sensible options and rarely wastes a possession. That was clear in the opening round. 

Bishopstown struggled at times to get a foothold, but Holland’s contribution kept them in touch and gave them a focal point up front when they needed one.

What makes him important now is not pressure or expectation, but timing. Round 2 is often where teams settle. The first weekend can be frantic. Bishopstown will want to tidy up their play, find a bit more rhythm and make better use of their attacking play.

Holland's time with the Cork U20s has clearly helped him. Playing at that level sharpens decision-making and forces players to trust their instincts. Holland has brought that back into Bishopstown colours without changing his style. He still plays with the same calmness, but there’s a confidence in how he carries himself.

Kilshannig will bring plenty of intensity on Saturday. They beat Clyda Rovers by two points in the first game. They’re a side that likes structure and physicality, and they won’t give Bishopstown much space. 

That’s where Holland’s influence becomes useful. He doesn’t need to dominate the game. He just needs to continue doing what he already does — take the right options, keep the ball moving and give Bishopstown a bit of shape in attack.

Bishopstown aren’t looking for a one-man solution. What they do need is a bit of composure in the right moments.

If the city side are to find the kind of balance they’re capable of, Holland’s influence — quiet, tidy and dependable — will be part of it.
