European Athletics Championships: Sarah Lavin out of 100m hurdles, Nick Griggs 8th in 5000m

Nick Griggs finished eighth in the final of the 5000m in the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham.
In a thrilling finish, the race was won by Jakob Ingebrigtsen with a time of 13:15.29, his fourth title in a row, in what was his first race of the season.

Grigs finished with a time of 13.21, with Brian Fay in 14th and Darragh McElhinney finishing further back in 19th despite a promising start to the race.
Speaking to RTÉ after the race, Griggs was in a great position until his shoe came off.
"I don't want to make excuses, but I did lose my shoe..."
"You just never expect to be in that situation in a European final."

"Someone just clipped my shoe at the back.
"Eighth is solid. I don't want to make excuses, but I lost my shoe. You never expect yourself to be in that position.
"Three or four laps out when Jakob Ingebrigtsen is about to kick, there's not much you can do. I tried to level my head.
"It was coming off and I just had to kick it off and that was about three-and-a-half laps to go."
In the women's 100m hurdles, Sarah Lavin finished sixth in her heat as she failed to advance to the semi-finals.
She finished with a time of 13.07, with a time of 13.01 needed to qualify.
Ciara Neville's 100m campaign came to an end as she finished eighth in the semi-finals with a time of 11.57.
In the women's 3000m steeplechase heats, Abbie Sheridan did not qualify for the final after she finished outside the top eight.
The race was won by Britain’s Elise Thorner.
In the men's shot put final, Eric Favours finished in 10th with a score of 19.59.
In the women's hammer throw, Nicola Tuthill is through to the final after she threw for 70.09m, to finish fourth group B and eighth overall.
The final is on Wednesday night.
