IAFC: Gabriel Rangers take on Mitchelstown in Group 2 opener

The opening day of Group 2 brings together two sides who arrive into the championship with the very same goal.
St Finbarr’s second team and Dromtarriffe make up the group.
Mitchelstown, perennial contenders in recent seasons, begin another campaign with the weight of promise on their shoulders, while Gabriel Rangers – hardened by a challenging league run – will relish the chance to test themselves against one of the fancied outfits.
Mitchelstown’s story has been well documented. Since winning the County JAFC title in 2013, they have repeatedly knocked on the door at IAFC level, losing finals in 2017, 2020, 2021 and 2023.
New manager Denis Reen, who previously guided Kiskeam to the PIFC crown in 2016 and Kilshannig to the same title in 2024, has spoken openly about the potential he sees in the North Cork side.
He was attracted by their strong age profile, depth of talent and the sense that they are “very close to doing something special.”
Their 2025 championship exit – a quarter-final defeat to an Ilen Rovers team that went on to reach the final – still lingers. It did show that the Avondhu side aren't far away.
Crucially, Mitchelstown will again be backboned by inter-county quality: Seán Walsh and Cathail O’Mahony are central figures, offering scoring power, athleticism and leadership.
Gabriel Rangers, meanwhile, come into the summer with a quieter build-up but no shortage of ambition. They are now under the guidance of Kerry man Padráig Lynch, whose appointment has brought fresh structure and clarity to their approach.
Their league campaign resulted in Division 4 demotion, though it was still a positive one in different ways. It should stand to them.
The West Cork side will see this game as a perfect chance to lay down a marker. They have the quality. They also have a nice mix of youth and experience. Club chairman Mark Cronin is still a key figure on the panel.
Group 2 is expected to be tight, and this opener will set the tone. Mitchelstown carry the pedigree and the pressure; Gabriel Rangers carry the opportunity. For both, the first step towards a knockout push begins this evening.
