HELIO Inter Cork won the first, the 68th Grandon’s Toyota Shield title, played in the league’s inaugural calendar season in scintillating fashion at sun-drenched Turner’s Cross last Sunday afternoon.

The premier division leaders came of age before their fervent fans to serve up a sparking display of intelligent passing and deadly finishing to brush aside the challenge of gallant Harvey’s eleven who tried manfully to stem the tide of their dominant opponents.

It was fitting that they should be rewarded with a wonderfully taken free-kick themselves by sub Ross Malone from fully twenty-five yards to bring the curtain down on the scoring in the 81st minute.

Helio gained the initiative as early as the ninth minute when a bout intricate passing spit open Harvey’s back-four for David Marijuan to set up Juan Da Villa for a simple tap-in goal.

After Ruben Sarasa and Da Villa went close to adding a second, Marijuan cut in to fire past Sean Cunningham for a delighful second in the 35th minute.

With Harvey’s looking to go in at two down at the break, Sarasa got on the end of Sergio Castana’a pass to nick a third in the 44th minute.

Helio continued to apply the pressure but had to wait until the 69th minute for man-of-the-match Marijuan to score the goal of the game when he controlled a high ball on his chest before turning and rifling the ball into the top corner much to the delight of the large Helio supporters who never let up playing music and banging drums right through the ninety minutes.

Da Villa went on to lob a fifth with twenty minutes remaining before Malone’s consolation gave Harvey’s a moment of magic on the big stage.

Referee Damien Morey and his assistants Denis Cronin and Albert Navarro did well in a keenly fought contest which threatened to boil over at times as the warm temperatures tested the players resolve on the beautifully manicured surface.
