The sad passing of Mayfield harriers member Denis Wall on Friday brought widespread sadness to his family and many friends in the sport of draghunting.

It is ironic that Denis’s brother Anthony died last year on July 2 and both were very popular in the sport and loyal members to their club.

The Wall brothers that included another later brother Paul were also top- class pigeon fanciers winning major races at local and national level.

Denis was battling illness in the last couple of months and this season along with his son Denis Dowling were trainers of the aptly named Anyone on the Phone who ironically finished runner up in the Clogheen Puppy draghunt at Stuake on the day he passed away.

The funeral mass for Denis will take place at 11am tomorrow at Church of the Resurrection Farranree and afterwards to the Island Crematorium.

May his gentle soul Rest in Peace.

Clogheen hosted their Senior meeting at Stuake on Sunday and for Northern Hunt trainer John O’Callaghan it was a welcome win when his charge Authentic took the Senior honours.

In a driving finish the winner saw off Stargaze of Griffin United trained by Frank Allen with Border Mystery in his first Senior draghunt following his promotion from the Senior maiden grade snatching third ticket.

The concluding ticketing hounds were Sean T, Knockane Jack and Misty.

In the Senior maiden draghunt there was joy for the consistent Jerry Murphy Shanakiel harriers kennel when Mexican Jet got up in a tight finish to deny clubmate Travel Star trained by Thomas Canniffe.

The Mary Barrett trained Lewis lass concluded a 1.2.3 for Shanakiel harriers with Starman’s Son, Casey Jack and Tiger’s Belle filling the minor tickets.

In the Puppy draghunt at the same venue there was more glory for Tristan O’Herlihy and his Fair Hill family when his charge Starlight held off the challenge of Anyone on the Phone of Northern Hunt.

Mary Barrett is having a lot of fun with her young charge Charlotte’s Lass who ran another gallant race to snatch third ticket.

The Puppy maiden draghunt was another exciting finish with the honours going to the inform Kyle and Calum McCarthy Mayfield trained Mossy’s Reign winning his third draghunt of the season.

Naoi’s Boy and Naoi’s Girl from the Jerry Murphy and Sheila Cummins kennel filled second and third tickets.

The Clogheen club would like to thank the farming community of the Stuake for the use of their land that ensured a successful meeting.

Draghunting action continues next weekend with Griffin United hosting their Puppy meet on Friday at Killavallig with an 8pm slip and on Sunday Whitechurch will host the Senior meeting at noon.

Many thanks to the sponsors of recent International meeting Megan O’Leary of Recovery Zone, Paul O’Brien Plumbing, T & P Plastering (Tristan O’Herlihy, Paul Cummins) and John O’Sullivan Meats.
