One of the greatest Cork victories in a very long time — an extraordinary comeback to take down a fancied Donegal outfit in the All-Ireland SFC Round 2A game in Ballybofey on Saturday afternoon.
This was pure heart, character, resilience — you name it — as the Rebels booked their spot in the last eight at Croke Park for the first time since 2023. It was also Cork’s first win in Donegal since 1998.
Where do you even start summing this up? At half-time it looked predictable enough: the All-Ireland favourites five points to the good, Cork struggling to get any real foothold, and the home crowd sensing another routine afternoon.
Instead, what followed was a second half for the ages. This was no fluke — a fully deserved victory, built on Cork’s dominance in the last quarter and another majestic performance from Steven Sherlock, who finished with 0-9.
The Rebels led for the first time after 62 minutes and they stayed ahead when the hooter sounded.
All done without midfielder Colm O'Callaghan, this was majestic and the scenes afterwards told the story.

There was one change to the Cork team from the one announced on Friday, with Dara Sheedy coming in for Ruairí Deane.
After a patient opening, Donegal hit the front after two minutes through Ryan McHugh despite Cork sitting in a slow block. The Rebels responded with a fine Sheedy effort, Ian Maguire heavily involved in the build-up.
A Michael Murphy free and an Oisín Gallen point pushed Donegal two clear, while Caolan McGonagle had a goal chance only for his effort to go straight at Patrick Doyle. It was 0-3 to 0-1 after eight minutes.
A mix of lateral Cork play and Donegal’s sharpness saw the Ulster men move four ahead before a Steven Sherlock orange flag offered the Rebels a spark — or so it should have.
Jim McGuinness’s side stitched together two more points to lead 0-7 to 0-3 after 20 minutes as Cork probed for openings that simply weren’t there. Brian O’Driscoll and Tommy Walsh saw plenty of ball, while Sheedy dropped deep, but with limited return.
Donegal then struck what looked like a crucial blow after 22 minutes, capitalising on a Cork slip as Murphy teed up Conor O’Donnell for a simple finish. They could have had a second goal moments later, but Seán Meehan threw himself across the line to deny Murphy.

A Sherlock orange flag from a free cut the deficit to five with eight minutes to the break, 1-7 to 0-5. Just before the hooter, Luke Fahy had a half-chance for goal from a tight angle, but his effort hit the side netting. Cork trailed by five at half-time.
The Leesiders needed a strong restart, but it didn’t come. Donegal kept the ball patiently before Murphy split the posts in a slow, ponderous opening to the second half, 1-8 to 0-5 after 40 minutes. Seán McDonnell became Cork’s third scorer to keep them in touch.
Donegal led 1-10 to 0-6 after 45 minutes before Sheedy was forced off injured. Daniel O’Mahony then produced another vital goal-line clearance to prevent a second Donegal goal as Cork hung on.
A Sherlock two-point free trimmed the gap to five, followed by a white flag from sub Conor Corbett. Still, Donegal always seemed to have the answers. Peadar Mogan pointed to restore their cushion, 1-11 to 0-9 after 51 minutes.
A Sherlock 45 and an Ian Maguire point left just a goal in it entering the final quarter. Cork were now enjoying a sustained purple patch. O’Driscoll had a golden chance to level but skewed wide.
It didn’t derail them. A peach of an orange flag from Fahy left Cork one behind after 61 minutes, 1-11 to 0-13. A minute later, Tommy Walsh landed a two-pointer and Cork led for the first time.

Jason McGee levelled for Donegal, but another Sherlock orange flag from a free pushed Cork 0-17 to 1-12 ahead with five minutes left. Donegal sub Turlough Carr cut it to one, but Cork had enough done.
What a win.
