Cork defender Matty Taylor has been hit with a devastating setback, with scans confirming he has suffered a cruciate ligament injury that will rule him out for a lengthy spell, The Echo understands.
The Mallow man sustained the injury playing for his club against Kanturk last Sunday week, a game in which he initially appeared to have picked up a routine knee issue. Once the swelling eased and further tests were carried out, the worst fears were realised: the dreaded cruciate.
It is a cruel blow for a player who had only recently returned from a shoulder injury picked up while playing for Cork against Kildare in March.
That lay-off had already disrupted his season, and his return had been viewed as a significant boost for John Cleary’s side. Instead, his comeback has been cut short almost immediately.
But while Cork will feel his absence, the impact is arguably even greater for Mallow, who lose one of their most influential figures heading into the McCarthy Insurance Group Premier SFC.
Taylor has been central to everything positive about Mallow’s rise in recent years.

Mallow’s ambitions in the Premier SFC have been steadily building, and Taylor’s presence has been a cornerstone of that progress.
Both Cork and Mallow will rally around him, but there is no disguising the scale of the loss for his club.
The hope now is that his surgery and rehab go smoothly. The surgery will take place next week.
