Blackstone Rovers enjoy historic moment as a club, fielding a senior women's soccer team for the first time
The Blackstone Rovers first ever women’s senior soccer team.
For more than a quarter of a century, Blackstone Rovers has been a cornerstone of grassroots soccer, known primarily for its men’s and schoolboys’ teams.
Now, in a landmark development that signals both growth and inclusivity, the club has taken a major step forward with the creation of its first-ever women’s team.
Chairperson Lorraine Sloane describes this moment as not just historic, but transformative—an evolution that reflects both the needs of the local community and the ambitions of the club itself.
“For over 26 years, Blackstone Rovers has been synonymous with men’s and schoolboys’ soccer,” said Lorraine.
"Last year marked an exciting new chapter as we welcomed our first underage girls’ team, and just before Christmas, plans were set in motion to establish the club’s very first ladies’ soccer team.
"An historic moment for the club and one that is very much welcomed.”
The idea for a senior women’s team did not emerge in isolation.

It followed the successful introduction of an underage girls’ side, led by John McNamara, whose efforts quickly highlighted a broader issue.
While opportunities for boys and young men in the area remain plentiful, older girls often face limited options, forcing many to travel significant distances to continue playing the sport they love.
“Once the underage girls’ team was established, it became clear there was a significant gap.
"There simply weren’t enough opportunities locally for girls to progress beyond school level.
"That’s something we felt strongly needed to change.”
Recognising this need, the club moved swiftly.
By November, the decision was made to form a senior ladies’ team—and the response exceeded all expectations.
Training sessions began shortly before Christmas under the guidance of coach Ciarán McCarthy, and what started as a small group quickly grew into a committed and competitive squad.
From just a handful of players in the early days, the team has expanded to the point where they are now preparing to compete in the CWSSL Division 2 for the upcoming season.
“Our current squad is made up of a strong core of local players.
"Some have played at schoolgirl level, while others are completely new to the game.
"That mix of experience and enthusiasm has created a really positive dynamic.
“Pulling on a Blackstone jersey has always meant something special around the Fairfield, and now seeing our ladies’ team doing so brings a whole new level of excitement and hope for the future.
“It’s no secret that girls can drift away from sport for various reasons.
"Self-consciousness, lack of enjoyment, or simply not having the right environment can all play a part.
"That’s why creating a welcoming, inclusive team was so important to us.”
Encouragingly, participation continues to grow week by week. As more players see that football can be balanced alongside work, education, and other commitments, interest is steadily increasing.
The club remains open to newcomers, emphasising that all abilities are welcome.
Training currently takes place on Monday evenings at the Sam Allen pitches, and the club actively encourages anyone interested to get involved through their social media channels.
The introduction of the women’s team has also contributed to a renewed energy around the Fairfield.
After a difficult winter, the grounds are once again buzzing with activity, with multiple teams training and competing throughout the week.
“There’s a great buzz around the Fairfield again. It’s amazing to see it brought back to life, and our ladies’ team is now a big part of that.”
Today, Blackstone Rovers boasts four teams and approximately 80 members, reflecting steady growth across all levels.
The men’s senior side is currently pushing for a league title, while the U15 boys are chasing promotion.
Alongside these achievements, the development of both girls’ and women’s football stands out as a defining success story.
For Lorraine, who first became involved in the club nine years ago when her son joined the academy, the journey has been deeply personal.
Now serving as Chairperson, she has witnessed firsthand the club’s evolution—and the formation of the women’s team represents a proud milestone.
“It’s difficult to fully capture how far we’ve come but having a ladies’ team is truly the cherry on top.
"We couldn’t have asked for a better group of players, and we’re incredibly excited about what the future holds.”
With strong foundations, growing support, and a clear sense of purpose, Blackstone Rovers’ first women’s team is not just a new addition—it’s a statement of intent.
A sign that the club is moving forward, embracing inclusivity, and ensuring that the beautiful game is open to everyone.
