Midleton CBS Secondary School triumphed over Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh, Bishopstown to claim their first ever Munster cup at U15 level, winning the U15 FAI Schools Munster Minor Soccer Cup at St Colman's Park recently.

Brian Cody was the hero on the day for Midleton CBS as his close-range finish in the second half settled this titanic battle between two excellent school sides.

On a warm day at St Colman’s Park, Cobh Ramblers, the game got off to a frantic start with both sides pushing forward in search of the opening goal.

Conor Casey for Mildeton CBS had the first opportunity to open the scoring on the day but his chip from just inside the penalty area sailed over the bar.

Likewise Harry O’Riordan for Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh fired his shot from the edge of the box over the bar.

Midleton CBS midfielder Mason Richards then went close with two long-range efforts.

The first hit a Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh defender on route to goal and went narrowly wide.

The second was a tremendous effort from the edge of the box which looked destined to sail into the top corner but it rebounded off the crossbar. The game remained scoreless at half time with neither side breaking the deadlock.

Early in the second half, Midleton CBS midfielder Lorcan Evans dribbled forward and shot from the edge box but his effort was well saved by Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh’s keeper Jack Crowley.

On the 55th minute mark, Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh nearly opened the scoring.

They broke quickly from a corner and launched the ball forward to striker James Murray who unleashed a thunderous shot from inside the box but Midleton CBS keeper Harry Lutz made an excellent save.

Moments later, Midleton CBS opened the scoring. Midleton CBS Midfielder Roan Kelleher won the ball in midfield, drove forward into the box, jinked past the onrushing Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh defender and squared the ball to striker Brian Cody, who coolly slotted the ball into the net. In the dying moments of the match, with Midleton CBS leading 0-1, Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh had an opportunity to equalise from a free kick on the edge on the box.

Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh midfielder Charlie O’Sullivan played a great ball into the box and Sean Dollard rose well and headed the ball towards goal but his effort sailed wide.

The full-time whistle then blew and the Midleton CBS players and supporters erupted in jubilant celebrations.

Midleton CBS co-managers Noirin Lenihan and Chris Melnyk said that they were “delighted with the victory on the day against an excellent Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh side."

They further added that they were “proud of their players efforts in the Munster final and throughout the season."

This victory meant that the U15 FAI Schools Munster Minor Soccer Cup would head to Midleton CBS for first time in the school's history and it is their second Munster cup in recent years, having previously won the Munster Senior Cup.

Midleton CBS now progress to the FAI Schools U15 Minor National Cup semi-final, which will be played on April 30 against a Leinster school side.
