Five-star Avondale U17s sweep past Mallow United in Teddy Healy Cup
Youth Soccer: Avondale United scorers Sebastian Dubkiewicz, Brooklynz Gracino (2), Odhran McCaffrey and Patrick McCarthy after their 5-0 victory against Mallow United in the U17 Teddy Healy Cup at Avondale Park.
Avondale United advanced to the next round of the U17 Teddy Healy Cup with an excellent second-half performance at Avondale Park Saturday morning.
They led att half-time courtesy of a late goal from Brooklnz Gracino after some excellent work by Darragh McKeon, who put in a Man of the Match performance in the middle of the park.
The home side ran riot in the second half and went two up in the 61st minute when Odhran McCaffrey got on the end of a Sebastian Dubkiewicz defence splitting through ball to score. The Dale went three to the good in the 70th minute when Patrick McCarthy scored from the penalty spot.
They didn’t have to wait long to go before Gracino grabbed his second goal of the game with a very cool finish. To give Mallow credit, they battled hard but Avondale were too good on the day.
Dubkiewicz was rewarded for leading the line all through to score the goal of the game with a superb effort that flew high into the roof of the net.
The hosts made a bright start to the game with Patrick McCarthy testing Mallow’s net-minder Reilly O’Connor with an effort from the edge of the box after four minutes. Mallow grew into it and had their first shot on target in the 21st minute when their captain Christopher Jones let fly, but Sean Semchiy was alert to make a smart save.
Mario Horky was causing havoc down the left wing and when he found Dubkiewicz in the middle of the box with a peach of a cross, the latter’s flick just went the wrong side of the post. They made a deserved breakthrough in the 43rd minute. Darragh McKeon made a strong run into the Mallow box and pulled the ball for Brocklynz Gracino to rifle his effort high into the net off the crossbar.
Mallow came very close to an equaliser a minute later when Jones got his head to Robert Stokes' cross, but Semchit got down well to make a superb save.
The Dale started the second half on the front foot with McKeon driving them on from the middle of the park and he was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet in the 51st minute when he showed all his skill again to breeze past two defenders, only for his effort to go inches over the bar. However, they didn’t have to wait long to increase their lead, as two minutes later Dubkiewicz released Odhran McCaffrey and he coolly slotted home.
Avondale then were awarded a penalty in the 69th minute when McKeon was upended. Patrick McCarthy took the responsibility to take the spot kick and he made mistake.
Avondale now had their tails up and went 4-0 up four minutes later. McKeon again found Gracino with a terrific through ball and he calmly slotted home.
The home side weren’t finished scoring and when Horky showed great feet to cross another dangerous ball in the 79th minute, he picked out Dubkiewicz free in the box for him to blast his effort high into the net.
