Newcestown made it two wins from two in Division 2 of the RedFM Hurling League as they saw off Ballymartle by 0-21 to 0-12 on Sunday.
Having opened their campaign with victory over Na Piarsaigh a fortnight ago, the west Cork club built on that with a fine all-round display and led by 0-10 to 0-7 at half-time. Richard O’Sullivan impacted from play and frees while his brother Séamus and Edmund Kenneally also got on the scoresheet and Podge Collins contributed three points after coming on as a sub.
They did have a stroke of fortune as a Ballymartle goal was ruled out at a time when the deficit would have been cut to four points. Leo Hennessy, Luke O’Callaghan and Ryan Deasy weighed in with points for the Riverstick outfit.
Joining Newcestown at the top on four points are the other team promoted from Division 3 last year, Bride Rovers – they beat Na Piarsaigh by 0-19 to 1-15 in Farranree.
In Brinny, Chris O’Leary’s late free earned home side Valley Rovers a 0-20 each draw with Ballincollig.

It was one of eight points for the former Cork and Dublin player, three of those from play, as he wielded influence throughout. Brian Keating, who had scored after coming off the bench for Cork on Saturday night, finished with four points for Ballincollig, who led by 0-18 to 0-14 with eight minutes left and then, after being pegged back, looked to have taken victory through Seán O’Neill’s late point.
In defence for Valleys, Cian Johnson, Eoin Guinane and Will Hurley shone while Matthew Woods was to the fore at midfield and Johnny O'Leary and Evan O'Shea each got two points.
Tadhg O'Connell and debutant Kevin O'Leary had three points apiece for Ballincollig, who trailed by 0-9 to 0-4 after 22 minutes and but were back to within three, 0-10 to 0-7, by half-time. Ross O'Donovan and James Dwyer helped them to get on top in the third quarter, though they did need goalkeeper James Linehan to make four big saves, including a penalty.
There was also a draw in Kanturk, where visitors Newtownshandrum fought back to finish with 3-17 and the hosts had 2-20.

Kanturk, for whom Cork player Brian O’Sullivan scored 0-10, looked set for victory but quick-fire goals from Cormac O'Brien and Robert Troy wiped out a six-point deficit. Jamie Coughlan converted seven frees for the North Cork side – including the long-range equaliser at the death – who also had Ronan Geary netting while both of Kanturk’s goals were scored by Colin Walsh.
On Friday night, Erin’s Own belatedly opened their campaign with a 2-21 to 0-12 win away to Carrigaline.
