Glen Rovers 1-16 Charleville 1-22

Charleville made it two wins from two in RedFM Hurling Leagues Division 1 at Blackpool on Sunday morning.

Dominic Foley’s side navigated a tit-for-tat opening before taking full control of the tie in the closing stages of the first half by outscoring their city rivals 0-10 to 0-4. That gave them a 0-16 to 0-8 advantage at the break and the result was all but secured once Cathal O’Carroll goaled in the 35th minute.

It was a fully deserved win in the end, against a Glen team that had Micheál Mullins operating in midfield.

Stephen Lynam did pull a goal back, to make it 1-19 to 1-12 in the 43rd minute, and any prospect of a late comeback was undone by a tooth-and-nail shift by the Charleville backline.

Their forwards had done more than enough up until that point as David Riordan, Tim Hawe, and Conor Buckley all tallied five points. They were part of a panel that had eight different red jerseys find the target, while the Glen were reliant on Lynam as the source of their scores.

This showed throughout the first half as Charleville surged in front once the game went 0-6 apiece in the 15th minute.

Hawe got two and Cathal O’Carroll raised one white flag for the North Cork side during this stretch. Brian Moylan hit back before Charleville rattled off another three points, a free and 65 from Riordan during while Conor Buckley tapped over to make it 0-13 to 0-7.

Rhys Dunne went for goal in response for the Glen and his effort was easily caught by Conor Reynolds.

Charleville ended up leading by eight when the referee blew for half-time and they restarted with a close-range Buckley free.

Two quick Lynam scores proved to be a false dawn as it was followed by a Jack Callaghan pass to Cathal O’Carroll for a goal that pushed Charleville further in front at 1-17 to 0-10 in the 35th minute.

The Glen got a free near the posts, just seconds later, and a low shot by Lynam was scrambled off the line as the forward aimed for the back of the net.

It felt significant; despite the home side winning another free shortly after and Lynam reducing the gap to nine points.

Charleville simply kept doing what they had been doing from throw-in, passing the sliotar into space and shooting on sight. Riordan and Hawe benefited from this late on as their advantage swelled to 1-19 to 0-11.

The Glen rallied late on, but the damage had long been done, despite some nice scores from Lynam and Conor McCarthy in the dying minutes.
