Without doubt the performance of the weekend goes to Division 1 outfit Ballyphenane Celtic, who dumped five-time winners and Premier champions Doolan’s Cow out of the Grandon’s Toyota Shield at Gortnaglough Community Park.
Robert Tier’s 15th-minute penalty for Celtic was sandwiched in between a flurry of yellow cards for both teams as referee Grahame Duffy exerted his control on proceedings.
The half ended with Timmy O’Reilly grabbing a second for the hosts before going on to score again four minutes into the second half. Ryan Constant combined with Conor Callaghan to add a fourth on the hour leaving the visitors with a mountain to climb. A late brace from Greg Kelly came too late for Doolan’s as Ballyphehane march into the last eight to face Jay Bazz Barbers.
Holders DHF Grangevale eased their way into the quarter-finals following a comfortable win over a gallant OBS 11 at sun-drenched Camben. Four goals from John Barry (2), Corey Harris and Billy Tabb inside the opening half hour rocked the hosts.
The loss of goalkeeper David Guiney with a facial injury was amply compensated by replacement, the much-decorated Arainn McGrath. McGrath made a couple of fine saves but could do nothing to prevent Barry completing his hat-trick and Araon O’Sullivan (2) and sub Luke Dennehy adding further goals in the second-half.
The LAB advanced to the last eight after two early goals from Matthew Ekhosuehi could only be countered by a reply from Dripsey captain Ciaran Pittorino halfway through the opening half.
Helio turned around a 3-1 half-time deficit to take all three points at Mayfield Park courtesy of second-half goals from Mauricio Galicia Barajas and Ruben Sarasa. Earlier, Hospitals’ Dara Flanagan and Inter’s Juan De Villa exchanged goals within a minute of each other before a Wymin Sivakumar double on the stroke of half-time tipped the scales in the visitor’s favour.
The first meeting between these two teams in the top flight ended all square after Diego Lopes Soeiro opened the scoring for DoMA in the eighth minute and Harveys' top-scorer Aaron Cooney was put through by Aaron Ahern to level with three minutes remaining.
A 68th-minute strike from Joseph Ryan was enough for leaders Abbey to secure their second win of the campaign at Corinthians Park last Saturday afternoon.
Here’s Health were good value for their two-nil win over promoted Marlboro Trust at Mayfield Park last Sunday morning. Callan Dempsey netted from the penalty spot after eight minutes before missing from his second penalty attempt on the stroke of half-time. The win was confirmed when Levent Arslan got in for the decisive second in the 81st minute.
Valley and DCT shared the spoils at Conna after Robbie Burke’s 33rd-minute penalty for Munsters was cancelled out by John Noonan’s 57th-minute equaliser for the Rangers.
ASH were in need of a win after losing their previous two and took the contest to their opponents by going two up inside eight second-half minutes through Sean Murphy and Shaun Dunlea. Within five minutes of Dunlea’s second, Daragh Bagnell Hartnett set up Kaelem Hennessy to half the deficit on the hour. The hosts hung on for a welcome three points.
Council’s good start to the campaign continued with a third win in four to go top at Camden last Sunday lunchtime. Two first-half goals from Thomas Clery from assists by former Cork Eagles’ stalwart Greg Sieniski and Cian Power set the tone for the hosts to add further late goals from sub John O’Driscoll and Emeka Mbudinma.
Debutants AI FC’s sealed their first win of the campaign with a win over Curry House at Rockenham. Four first-half goals from Dylan Ndangoh Nchankea (2), Marvin Ekhosuehi and Willa Karuru were followed by further goals after the break from Ekhosuehi (2) and Kamare Traore. Arthur McDonagh completed the scoring with a consolation for the Tigers with five minutes remaining.
The draw for the quarter-finals of the Grandon’s Toyota Shield resulted as follows : ISF Ballyphehane Celtic v Jay Bazz, DHF Grangevale (holders) v Marlboro Trust, Martin Harvey Solicitors v The LAB, Helio Inter Cork v Arc Rovers or Abbey Business.
