Connections run deep in derby between Cork City and Cobh Ramblers

Cork soccer is a small place.
There's transfers, families, and friends crossing over at all levels from the schoolboys league to the national stage.
It gets even smaller when there's just two League of Ireland clubs, operating within a half an hour drive depending on the traffic.
Those two teams will meet on Friday, at St Colman's Park, for the first league derby of the season and a max capacity crowd is expected on the Great Island.
Cork City will go into this game aiming to end the season as First Division winners, for the third time in five seasons, while Cobh go in looking to deliver a statement performance with aspirations of going up in the autumn.
The narrative will be the same as always. The Rebel Army will go down with a team boasting star players like former Republic of Ireland international Sean Maguire, and be listed as favourites. That means pressure, while Cobh will be out to dig in and get their first league win over their near rivals since 2021, when Jake Hegarty got in to score during a closely contested Cork derby in Covid-enforced empty St Colman’s Park.
The Ramblers do know how to jab in this figure. They managed to sucker punch City during their last three meetings in the Munster Senior Cup, most recently at St Colman's Park in February 2025.
David Bosnjak got the goals that night, against his former club, a result that acted as a warning of things to come as the Rebel Army prepared for a season that would be fraught with leads slipping before relegation at the beginning of October.
Friday will be different. Friday is the real stuff. Friday is that night of a play when families and friends then up, and the spotlight is that extra bit brighter.
The only thing that matters is the rivalry, getting one over on those residing just down the road, and making a statement in an environment where everyone knows everyone.
Cobh Ramblers know this far too well as six members of their starting team this season have all spent time at Cork City at various stages in their careers.
Shane Griffin and Gary Buckley lead the group, after winning a league and cup double with the club in 2017. Callum Honohan and Jason Abbott represented the Rebel Army at underage level, while Corey Chambers was their third-choice goalkeeper at one point.
There's also Cian Coleman, the defender who cut his teeth in the UEFA Youth League and experienced senior football at Turner's Cross for five seasons.
He even captained the club to the First Division title in 2022 and 2024, with the latter acting as his goodbye despite a place on the PFA Ireland Men’s First Division Team of the Year.

Coleman was disappointed, and nothing was held back when he spoke to about the situation in late 2024.
"Am I disappointed not to have my contract renewed? Absolutely," he said.
"My contract expired at the end of November and I haven’t been offered a contract from City so that changes things and gives me no choice really but to move on.
"My preference would have been to stay at the club but it’s out of my control. I’m not sure where the next part of my career will take me but I want to be playing at the highest level in this country if possible."
This winter saw even more change as Niall O'Keeffe went to Turner's Cross, after helping the Claret and Blue side finish second in the First Division under Mick McDermott.
Colin Healy could have been in charge down at St Colman’s Park, following on from his stint with Cork City and the Republic of Ireland WNT, but that move wasn’t to be in the winter of 2024.
McDermott on the other hand, was mentioned as a potential replacement for Ger Nash by supporters following his departure from Turner’s Cross last December. All that did was form part of the wider ecosystem, a small place that is made even smaller by just two clubs operating in the same space.
UCC will be joining in a few months through the new National League.
That conversation is awhile away yet. Right now it involves two sides.
