Cork boxer Steven 'The Irish Takeover' Cairns remains unbeaten.
He moved to 13-0 when he beat Cesar Ignacio Paredes, who hails from Peru, by unanimous points decision at the Vaillant Live Arena in Derby last Saturday night.
The Sheffield-based Cairns took this fight at late notice as he was supposed to fight at the Derek Chisora and Dillian Whyte card at the New Coop Arena in Manchester two weeks ago. However, this card was cancelled.
Trainer Dave Coldwell and promoter Frank Warren from Queensberry Promotions felt that it was important for him to keep busy and got this fight to keep him active.
Cairns made a good start to the fight and had Paredes on the back foot with a flurry of left hooks to his body.
When he caught his opponent with solid overhand right to the head the man from Peru certainly knew he had a tough night ahead of him.
Steven upped the tempo in the second round and landed a powerful uppercut that hurt the southpaw Paredes and he retreated behind his tight guard to try frustrate the Cork man.
The pattern of the next two rounds didn’t change much with Cairns on the front foot trying to pin Paredes down.
He did catch his opponent with a nice combination of two powerful body shots and a right to the head that certainly caught the judges eye.
Cairns did a great job not to get too frustrated and kept his composure by fighting behind his left jab. Parades was quick happy to use the ring to try avoid the Cork man, but was caught again with two big body shots to end the sixth round.
In the final two rounds, Cairns was just as dominant and got the result he was looking for 80-72 to stay unbeaten and he can now look forward to a title fight in March.
“It was a solid performance against a very tough South American from Peru,” Steven said.
"I took this fight at short notice because I felt I needed another fight before the end of the year, especially as I was supposed to be out a few weeks ago and the event was cancelled.
“I won every round convincingly by breaking up he’s body and landing fast right hand jabs and hooks to the head. He kept a very tight guard after getting nailed with a right uppercut in the second round and he kept on he’s bike for most of the fight.
"My plan is that I will have a title fight in March in Dublin.
"I will now enjoy the Christmas break and will get back in the gym at the start of the new year to prepare for that.”
