De Courcey's Paddy Harrington was star boxer during Munster Development trip to Hungary
Paddy Harrington from the De Courcey BC, who won the Boxer of the Tournament along with Gold Medal on the recent Munster Boxing trip to Hungary.
The Munster Development Boxing Squad made a very successful trip to Salgótarján, Hungary.
It was an incredible experience for the young boxers from around the province.
Ten Boxers aged from 13 to 17 from around Munster took on boxers from Hungary, Slovakia, Romania, Ukraine and Poland. None of these boxers had fought at this type of competition before so it was a huge eye opener for them.
Coach Danny Fitzpatrick explained that the whole experience, from the travelling, the different food, the calibre of boxers fought, and the different culture will be invaluable to the boxers development going forward, and he added that the confidence of the boxers had grown immeasurably since their first day out there.
“I think everyone had a wonderful experience on the trip,” Danny said.
“It was a real eye opener for everyone, from all the travelling, the different food everyone had to eat, and the calibre of boxers they fought, I personally think that it was a eat opener for us all.
“I want to congratulate all the athletes on their individual performances, as the experience will stand to them going forward in their careers,” Fitzpatrick added.
Munster Council President Ted Barry also congratulated the boxers, coaches and the team manager on their success.
“I want to congratulate all the boxers, the coaches and the team manager on another successful trip and I think the experience that everyone had will stand to them,” Ted said.
“We at the Munster Council will continue to get more boxers from all parts of the province together for trips to different countries going forward, as I think the extra learning will help them on the road of national titles and to have international success.
“I want to thank the clubs, and the coaches that give up their free time on Saturdays to coach the development squads, and particularly the boxers who have fully bought into what Munster Council are delivering for the betterment of boxing in Munster,” Barry added.
The Cork boxers were to the fore with gold medals for Michael Dooley, Ava Fitzpatrick, Paddy Harrington and Fionn McSweeney, silver medals were picked up by Cameron Burke and Jimmy O’Reilly.
To cap it all off Best International Boxer of the Competition went to Paddy Harrington of De Courcey BC.
