Glen/St Nicholas to host annual puc fada on St Stephen's Day

Glen Rovers/St Nicholas annual underage section poc fada takes place on St Stephen’s Day with teams playing for the Vince Twomey Shield.

All categories are catered for, with hurlers and camogie players invited to participate, as well as their families and friends in what the club hope will be a great event out in the open air.

Des Cullinane, outlining details of the event, said: “Again this year we are honouring one of our former Glen Rovers/St Nicholas greats, when the overall winning team will be presented with the Vince Twomey Shield and we are delighted to be looking forward to the event. Last year was a great success and hopefully this year will surpass that.”

The name Vincey Twomey is revered one at Glen Rovers/St Nicholas and Cork hurling folklore, fondly known as “the man with the cap”.

He lined out at centreback for the Cork senior team where he was known as a teak tough defender who dominated the area he patrolled and always wearing his trade mark peaked cap.

He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of 17 when he was picked on the Cork minor team before joining the junior side.

He joined the Cork senior panel during the 1950 championship and went on to play a key role during a golden era for Cork hurling winning three All-Ireland medals in a row 1952, 1953 and 1954. He also won four Munster medals and one National Hurling League.

He lined out with Munster inter-provincial teams on several occasions and also won a Railway Cup medal.

National Hurling Leagues, All-Ireland Junior Hurling Championship and Munster Senior and Junior Hurling Championship are amongst the vast collection of honours won in glittering inter-county career.

At club level he was a multiple championship medallist in both codes, winning senior county hurling championship medals in 1950, 1953, 1954, 1958, and a senior football championship in 1954 when the club achieved a county double. He retired from inter-county hurling following the conclusion of the 1957 championship.

For Cullinane the event is a special one as well as he is son in law of the legendary Mr Twomey.

“The winning team will be presented with the Vincey Twomey Shield and we hope to see plenty of teams participating to honour Vincey’s memory.

“There will also be separate prizes for juvenile teams and we look forward to participation from male and female players past and present, our camogie players play a huge role in our club and they are always out in force for what is a great club event,” added Mr Cullinane.

“Every year we have a great mix taking part and hopefully this year will be no exception, we would love to see all our under age and adult hurlers and camogie players out on the road enjoying the event.”

Entries will be taken at the club on the day at 10am and its €30 per team of three adult players and €15 per team of juvenile players. Teams can be mixed with adults or juveniles and the club are hoping as always to see big participation.
