It was a day that they will simply never forget for St Finbarr’s senior camogie players.
On Saturday, the Togher side won the AIB Munster senior camogie championship for the first time in a superb game. Massive credit to the Barrs who recovered from a poor start, where they went 1-3 to no score down to win by 3-11 to 2-12 in the end.
There were many key elements to their win, including their defence stepping up when they looked in trouble. Up front Sorcha McCartan started to use her physicality against a very physical De La Salle side.
But above all that, up stepped Kate Wall as she showed why she is part of the Cork senior squad and it was no great surprise to see her named Player of the Game afterwards. Her tally of 2-4 was crucial as she helped to drive her side to glory.
Speaking after the game, she said that it was unbelievable to have won.
“It's actually unbelievable, I think we all just burst into tears at the final whistle,” said Kate. “I don't know, it's just such an incredible feeling and it's just shows that the hard work and all that is just so worth it.
De La Salle started at blistering pace and before the Barrs knew what hit them, they were 1-3 to no score down. But they regrouped and by half-time there was only a point between the sides.
“They started really well and they're an excellent side. But I don't think we panicked because we've been there before. We've been down six points and we've brought things back and like the game is long.
“I always say it like just steady out and keep going and that’s what we did. We kept playing and we’re never beaten until the final whistle as these girls never give up.
“The goal from Orlaith [Cahalane – their first score to put three between them] kind of settled us and I don’t know if she meant that flick or not, she says she did, but it ended up in the net and that’s all that mattered.
“Then I just realised that once we ran at them there were opportunities there. We pushed up our backs, went player on player and I thought our full-back line was incredible. They like we're so tight, and I just think we started to win our battles and it just clicked for us at the end.
“I just felt that every time I got the ball there was space in front of me.
“But I wouldn't have scored that second goal if it wasn’t for the pass from Orlaith, it was a bounce pass. When players give you a ball like that you have to score and thankfully I did and we managed to win.

“We will enjoy the celebrations but we out again next weekend in the All-Ireland semi-final so it will be back to training on Tuesday and prepare for that.”
