It's been a great few days for the Barry Murphy family.

Jimmy Barry Murphy was a selector on Sunday as St Finbarr's landed their first Cork Premier SFC title since 2021, and their 11th in total.

In the process,  the Barrs, at the sixth attempt finally laid to rest their bogey team in finals, Nemo Rangers.

They ousted their great rivals in a game for the ages at Pairc Ui Chaoimh.

Last night, the Barry Murphy momentum continued as Brian Barry Murphy's Cardiff City beat Welsh rivals Wrexham 2-1 at The Racecourse to reach the League Cup quarter final.

The blue theme in the Barry Murphy household was again evident last night as The Bluebirds, a division below Wrexham in League One, were much the better side from the off.

Cardiff City took the bragging rights in the first meeting of the Welsh clubs in 21 years.

Yousef Salech gave Cardiff the lead, but former City striker Kieffer Moore came off the bench to cancel out that slender advantage.

Will Fish’s volley sealed a famous victory as Cardiff headed back to South Wales buoyed by both the result and the manner in which they outplayed their Championship hosts.

Whilst it was dubbed a Welsh Derby, geographically it's hardly a local affair as 138 miles separate these clubs.

In contrast the Barrs and Nemo are on one another's doorstep.

Speaking afterwards on Sky Sports television last night Brian Barry-Murphy said: “It was a tough game for us but we played in the way that we wanted to play from minute one, and I suppose showed our character and our skill level throughout the course of the game.

"So, it was very satisfying and I am immensely proud of the whole club.”

Cardiff will be the lowest-ranked side in tonight's quarter-final draw.

Cardiff last reached this stage during their iconic run to the 2011/12 final.

Brian Barry Murphy is hoping for a home draw in the quarter final.

“I’d love to be back at our own stadium. You’ve seen the distance our supporters have had to travel in midweek to Burnley and here tonight.

"For them, it would be great if we get back to our home stadium, which would be a great occasion for us all.”

Barry-Murphy was appointed head coach of League One side Cardiff City back in June, on a three-year deal.

He amassed 16 points from an unbeaten first six matches which saw him named EFL League One Manager of the Month for August 2025.

The former Manchester City academy coach had been Ruud van Nistelrooy's number two at Leicester.

The Cork-coach was recommended to Van Nistelrooy by his former Malaga team-mate Enzo Maresca - who was Pep Guardiola's assistant when Barry-Murphy was at City.

Ultimately, Barry-Murphy felt the time was right to take his first job as a number one since he was in charge of Rochdale in 2021.

After Rochdale Barry-Murphy had moved to Manchester City where he worked as the head coach of their Elite Development Squad.

He oversaw the development of players like Cole Palmer, Liam Delap and Morgan Rogers - who are now all at European Elite -level clubs.

Cardiff have enjoyed a great start to the season and are currently in third place with a game in hand over the two teams ahead of them.

Exciting times for the Barry Murphy family.

Jimmy and the Barrs have a Munster Club campaign to look forward to which they hope could end with a Croke Park appearance in an All-Ireland club final.

For Brian, promotion to the Championship would cap a dream debut season at Cardiff.

He's into bonus territory in the League Cup and tonight's draw will be of huge interest with so many big clubs still involved.

Blue definitely is the colour for the Barry Murphys.
