Tommy (the Governor) Hyde remains undefeated to move 13 and 0 when he beat Patrick Allotey on spilt decision in a Super Middleweight bout at the Memorial Hall Melrose in Boston in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Tommy’s opponent Allotey, who hails from Ghana was a big step up in class, as he 45 fights with only nine losses to his name and shared the ring with big names in the Super Middleweight Division.

It turned out to be a very tricky fight for the Cork boxer as Allotey was a never interested in engaging with Hyde and kept running around the ring at every opportunity hoping to steal rounds, however, Hyde got the decision ( 77-73, 74-76, 76-74).

The opening two rounds Hyde made good use of his jab, but found it difficult to land anything solid, as his opponent was using all his experience trying to slip in with some body shots and slip out again before getting caught.

Hyde pushed the pace of the fight in the third round by closing down the ring, but whenever he was just to load up Allotey tied him up by holding at every opportunity.

The next two rounds were very similar with Tommy being the aggressor, however, he found his opponent a difficult target to hit, however, he did land some telling shots at the end of the fifth round that certainly caught the judges eyes.

To give Tommy credit he never got frustrated with Allotey’s style and the lack of him trying to engage by listening to the advice of his corner. In the seventh round he got more success when he caught Allotey with a punishing right hook to the body.

In the final round Hyde continued to chase his opponent down, but again every time he got close to letting his hands go, Allotey done his best to hold him up.

This fight will definitely stand to Hyde as he learnt to win in a different way against an opponent with a lot of experience and the rounds will definitely stand to him going forward.

“I’m very happy to get the win against a very awkward opponent with a lot of experience,” Tommy said after the fight.

“I have had over 100 amateur fights and I never boxed someone with the style Allotey used tonight, he was very negative and tried to steal rounds, however, it’s another great fight for my development as a professional.

“I felt very comfortable for the eight rounds and I feel like I’m ready to move on to title fights now.

“I’m looking forward to getting back to the gym with my coach Lee Beard back in Manchester in the coming weeks and working on different things I learned from tonight’s fight.

“I’m very proud of the support I got in Boston and the atmosphere they made was unreal,” Hyde added.
