Donoughmore aren’t going to relinquish their Rebel Óg Premier 2 MFC title lightly.

Last Wednesday evening, the Muskerry side put in a statement performance to easily take care of a strong Clonakilty side on a scoreline of 2-17 to 0-10 in the semi-final at the Mardyke.

The team in black and white will face the famed St Finbarr’s in the decider next Monday at Páirc Uí Rinn (6.30pm). Donoughmore have no fear of coming up against more illustrious clubs.

This group has shown that. In last year’s final, Donoughmore took care of Castlehaven.

The Mid-Cork outfit are under the guidance of Ger Honohan. He had good reason to be happy after the 13-point success over Clon.

“It was a very tough battle, Clonakilty are a very good side,” he said post-match last week.

“When the ball was thrown in, we just played to our strengths rather than watching Clonakilty too much.

“I think that’s what the lads did. They came out and just played to their strengths. We have great players all over the field.

“We worked the ball well up the field and we took very, very good scores throughout the game. We got a good start against Mallow in the quarter-final game. We got a good start here too, which was the aim as it gives the lads confidence.

“I suppose we probably struggled a small bit in the game against Mallow in the second half. I think here we were very consistent from start to finish. We are very happy with the performance.

“It’s the work with the ball all over the field from one to fifteen. The players were willing to put their bodies on the line. They’re very, very committed.”

These are great times for Donoughmore in general when it comes to the big ball. Their U21s won the Mid-Cork B title earlier this year. The Junior A side are in the knockout stages of the Mid-Cork championship while now, the minors have another trip to Páirc Uí Rinn in their quest to make it back-to-back crowns next week at Premier 2 level.

“There’s a pile of work going in from on the field to off the field, there’s fantastic people in the club,” the Donoughmore minor boss says.

“I’m just one of many. There’s so many involved in the club. There’s a great spirit. There are great lads around the place when you go to training and stuff like that. I feel as a club we are very happy with where we are and where we are going.

“Last year was a fantastic success in terms of winning the Premier 2 Minor football. We didn’t think too much about last year coming into this season. We just wanted to get out and play. We wanted to be playing the top clubs in Cork in football. That’s what the players want. They just love playing the game."
