Cork ladies footballers are out of the All-Ireland series with a tough loss to Dublin

Dublin are through to the TG4 All-Ireland senior ladies football championship semi-final following their win at Parnell Park on Saturday.

They were just that bit better than Cork on the day as they were never behind from start to finish, and experienced players like Hannah Tyrrell, Leah Caffrey, Kate Sullivan, and Sinead Goldrick helped secure their win.

The scoreline isn’t probably a fair reflection on the game, as Dublin got two of their goals in the last minute or so as Cork piled forward for scores.

But credit also to Cork who gave it everything, with Maire O’Callaghan, Katie Quirke, Laura O’Mahony, and Emma Cleary working hard all through.

The big score was the goal in the first half, a penalty Tyrrell scored, and it put Dublin into a six-point lead and they never looked back from there.

Both sides had chances to get off the mark before Kate Sullivan registered the first point for Dublin four minutes in.

Cork were back on level terms three minutes later when Katie Quirke pointed from a free from distance, helped by the strong wind in her favour.

Hannah Tyrrell put Dublin back in front before a good Cork move, involving several players, saw Maire O’Callaghan put the Rebels back on level terms.

Will 11 minutes gone Tyrrell turned provider for Chloe Darby to put Dublin back in front, before Hannah McGinnis made it 0-4 to 0-2.

Dublin took a grip on the game after 15 minutes when Dara Kiniry was deemed to have fouled Sullivan.

Tyrrell stepped up and send Sarah Murphy the wrong way, to make it 1-5 to 0-2 from the resulting penalty.

Cork needed a score and another good run from O’Callaghan set up Laura O’Mahony to point, their first score in 11 minutes.

But Dublin were playing the better football at this stage and worked the ball down the pitch to see Tyrrell point from another free.

Cork kept working hard with Abigail Ring, not long on as a sub, setting up Quirke to get her second of the tie, to make it 1-6 to 0-4.

Neither side scored again before half-time as the home team were in control at the break as they turned to play with the wind, which had died down somewhat by this stage.

It took five minutes for the first score of the second half to arrive when Quirke pointed from another free to reduce the deficit, 1-6 to 0-5.

Despite playing against the wind Cork started the second half the better of the two sides and Quirke put only the goal between the sides as she split the posts again.

Dublin responded with Nicole Owens scoring and Sullivan added another to make it 1-8 to 0-6 after 41 minutes.

Now Dublin were starting to make the wind tell, as Sullivan added another point from distance.

Tyrrell extended their lead from a free, before she was on target from play as well, as Dublin scored five in a row without reply, to make it 1-11 to 0-6.

Two from Niamh Hetherton put Dublin further in front, before a Melissa Duggan goal effort for Cork went just wide.

Quirke pointed another free for her side but two late goals from Dublin put a gloss on the score as they move on to the semi-final and Cork bow out of the championship.
