Glanmire 0-8

Bandon secured promotion and a place in the final of Division 4 of the McCarthy Insurance Group Football League as they saw off Glanmire at Charlie Hurley Park on Sunday morning.

Going into this clash – a rehearsal for the Premier IFC opener in five weeks – the Lilywhites knew that any victory would be enough to take second place and set up a final meeting with Aghabullogue. Glanmire needed to win and also hope that Buttevant fell to Boherbue; while the latter part of that equation did materialise, the under-strength visitors found their hosts in good attacking form, especially in the first half.

While James Crowley’s free gave wind-assisted Glanmire the opening score, it was the only time they led. Centre-forward Jack Cullinane was excellent for Bandon and he was central to their first goal, linking with Mike Cahalane and scorer Mark Sugrue, through there was some fortune attached as his point attempt dropped in.

Sugrue added a couple of nice points in the wake of that - he was to finish with 1-5 - and, after Glanmire’s Rory McCarthy was unlucky with a shot that bounced off the top of the crossbar and over, Bandon responded with a second goal, Peter Calnan topping off a driving run with a good fnish for a 2-4 to 0-2 lead.

Despite losing midfielder Tim Twohig to injury, his partner Dylan O’Donovan was excellent while sub Conor Calnan made his presence felt with a shot that Jake O’Leary had to tip over and Calnan hit the bar in injury time. Though Glanmire did have a two-pointer from Crowley late in the first half, a 2-6 to 0-5 interval deficit was sizeable.

The wind was not an absolutely advantageous in itself, but Bandon were able to strengthen their lead through Conor Calnan and a Mike Cahalane two-pointer while Calnan forced another good save from O’Leary.

Sub Matthew O’Callaghan did open Glanmire’ second-half account on 43 but Bandon hit back with their third goal, a lovely pass from centre-back Peter Murphy setting up sub Ben Donegan, who dummied nicely before slotting home. After Sugrue’s fifth point, it was 3-10 to 0-6.

Glanmire did finish well with points from David O’Brien and a Brian O’Regan free, but the outcome was long since decided. They will hope that matters will be closer in the championship, while Bandon – who are also in a hurling league decider – will tune up with a clash against Aghabullogue in the decider.
