Passing of Duhallow GAA official regretted by all in the division and those who knew him

Cullen and Duhallow GAA mourned the unexpected death of former player and official Dan Dennehy.
The holder of Divisional Referee administrator at the time of his passing, the late Dan served in many organizations.
Dan was a true Cullen gael, holding a huge passion and massive pride in Cullen football, serving the club with huge distinction as a player and as an official.
Dan was part of a Cullen side that bridged 28 years to regain the Duhallow Junior Football Championship title in 1967.
Indeed Cullen swept all before them in a golden season for the club, winning a championship and two secondary competitions.
A dominant display helped Cullen brush aside Kiskeam in a quarter final in the championship and from a semi, they sent reigning champions Knocknagree packing thanks to a six point triumph.
That pitted Cullen up against neighbours Boherbue in a Duhallow final, Cullen secured a five point victory.
As a cornerback, Dan held a steadfast presence, along with his colleagues, they stood up when needed to shunt the impact of opposing attacks.
Off the field, Dan gave a lifetime of service to his beloved Cullen club in many capacities, serving the club from Chairman to representing the club at divisional level. He had great enthusiasm and boundless energy towards enhancing club facilities.
A founding member of the Duhallow/Muskerry Junior Football League in 1970, the competition generated excellent fare for a long number of seasons.
Elsewhere, Dan served as Duhallow Divisional Board Treasurer from 2016-2020, in more recent years, he occupied Duhallow GAA Referee Administrator, widely respected as a most efficient official.
A huge follower of Cork GAA and Ladies Football, his sudden death came shortly after Cork’s heroic performance against Kerry in the Munster SFC semi final went unrewarded.
A keen supporter of Cullen and Duhallow teams, Dan followed the fortunes of Mourneabbey Ladies Football club.
Regarded as a great community servant, Dan was a former member of Cullen Pipe Band having been bass/tenor drummer in addition to serving officerships in Cullen Community Council, Cullen Community Centre, Cullen Tidy Towns and Cullen Handball.
Holding a keen interest in golf, he joined up regularly with sporting friends for a round.
A dedicated Fianna Fail activist, he served as party officer at cumann level and the Cork North West Comhairle Dáil Ceantair.
Cullen GAA was left saddened by the passing of one of their most loyal servants.
“A former player, Chairman, and long-serving Duhallow GAA delegate, Dan's unwavering dedication to our club and community spanned decades. "His leadership and vision were instrumental in the development of many of our key facilities, leaving a lasting legacy that will benefit generations to come”, said a statement.
Widely respected within the GAA circle and across the community, the passing of Dan Dennehy is deeply regretted.
