Football Leagues wrap: Anthony O'Connor fires Knocknagree to derby win over Kanturk

Knocknagree’s impressive start in the McCarthy Insurance Group Division 2 Football League continued at the weekend with another victory.

John Fintan-Daly’s outfit have now won their first three games with the latest victory coming in the all-Duhallow derby on Sunday. 

Knocknagree edged out Kanturk on home soil on a scoreline of 2-13 to 1-10. They were in control for pretty much all of it with their two goals coming inside the first five minutes from Niall O’Connor and Killian Cronin.

Anthony O’Connor was again Knocknagree’s top scorer with 0-5 (0-2 f). Gearóid Looney also stood out with 0-3, all from play. Report on the game is attached above.

Another team with a 100 percent record so far are Dohenys after hammering Castletownbere in Dunmanway on Saturday on a scoreline of 6-11 to 0-10. 

It was 4-3 to 0-4 at half-time with Mark Buckley getting the bulk of the scores with 1-6 (0-4 f). Fionn Herlihy landed 1-3 (1 2pt) while Keith White, Barry O’Donovan, Aaron Mannix and Paudie Crowley also raised green flags.

Carbery Rangers are the third team with six points on the board after Round 3 following their one-point win over Ballincollig away from home last Thursday. The report on that game is attached to the start of this article. 

Béal Átha’n Ghaorthaidh are upwardly mobile in the second tier of the league after winning away at hapless Fermoy on Sunday, 5-15 to 1-18. The Mid-Cork men move onto three points while Fermoy remain without any points.

Seán Moynihan kicked 1-5 for the Gaeltacht outfit with Cian Dineen raising two green flags. The Shorten brothers, Ben and Donagh, also got in on the goalscoring act.

Finally from Division 2, O’Donovan Rossa picked up their first points of the season after a nervy 1-14 to 1-13 success at home against Valley Rovers on Sunday. The Skibbereen-based outfit were led on by the experienced Kevin Davis, who ended up with 0-6 (0-4 f). David Shannon was also very useful with 1-4 (1 2pt).

In Division 3, Barry Oldham’s Iveleary are now joint leaders with Bishopstown after scoring more goals than points in a home win over Clyda Rovers.

The Muskerry side won 5-4 to 0-10 with Chris Óg Jones’ brother Ian, netting three goals. The O’Leary brothers, Barry and Conor, also scored goals.

The outright leaders at the start of Round 3, Bishopstown, were held away to sticky Kiskeam on a scoreline of 3-10 to 0-19. Thomas Casey was Kiskeam’s scorer in chief with 1-3 with Shane O’Riordan and Anthony Dennehy also raising green flags.

Elsewhere in the third tier, Mallow defeated Rockchapel, Newmarket outlasted Aghada and Darragh O’Leary starred for Naomh Abán in a 1-14 to 0-15 home win over Kilshannig. O’Leary scored 1-5 (2 2pt) for the winners.

In Division 4, Glanmire recorded an eye-catching victory over Bantry Blues, 2-10 to 0-10. Brian Galvin and Kieran Kenneally with the goals.
