What better way to start your football weekend than a southside derby.

St Finbarr’s travel to near neighbours Nemo Rangers this evening for the third fixture in the McCarthy Insurance Group Division 1 Football League with throw-in at 7.30pm in Trabeg.

No matter what time of the season this particular contest takes place, it always catches the imagination of people.

Both teams come into this with perfect starts with four points from the opening two matches. Clonakilty are also on four points.

St Finbarr’s and Nemo Rangers have also been quite impressive given the time of the year.

Brian Roche’s side have had two difficult away games out in Muskerry, but defeated Cill na Martra and Éire Óg by five points and four points respectively.

The last outing was achieved without the services of Steven Sherlock who had a minor injury.

Nemo Rangers have gone about their business in a quiet but effective manner. The Trabeg-based outfit, under the guidance of Robbie O'Dwyer, won away at Newcestown by four points before putting four goals past Cill na Martra on home soil as it finished up 4-9 to 1-9.

The Barrs won the league as recently as two years ago while Nemo last claimed the league silverware the year before that.

A fascinating contest lies in store later between these two powerhouses.

Elsewhere this evening, Ballincollig host Carbery Rangers from Division 2 with a start time of 7.45pm. Both of these Premier Senior teams suffered demotion from the top-tier of the league last year, but both will be fancied to bounce straight back up in this campaign.

The Collig drew at home to Béal Átha’n Ghaorthaidh first day out before edging past Castletownbere away from home by four points.

Carbery Rangers have arguably been the standout team on Leeside so far. Seamus Hayes’ charges hammered Castletownbere down on the Beara Peninsula on the opening weekend, 3-20 to 0-14, before taking apart West Cork rivals O’Donovan Rossa at home last time out, 4-18 to 1-14.

Finally, in Division 3 this evening, Mallow entertain Rockchapel from 8pm.

A preview and fixture guide of Round 3 of the McCarthy Insurance Group Football League will be in tomorrow’s paper.
