Cork footballer Thomas Clancy has announced his inter-county retirement.
The Clonakilty player made his senior championship debut for the Rebels eleven years ago. The 32-year-old becomes the sixth player to leave the Cork panel since the 2024 season came to an end for the Leesiders back in June.
Clancy follows Carbery Rangers’ John O’Rourke and Killian O’Hanlon of Kilshannig who recently hung up their boots while Kilmacabea's Damien Gore and Steven Sherlock of St Finbarr's have opted out for next season. Douglas’ Kevin Flahive will be travelling for the inter-county campaign in 2025.
Clancy featured heavily in his debut campaign at senior level in 2013, but after that, injuries played a big part in his playing career for Cork. His first start was the 3-17 to 0-8 away win over Limerick in the Munster championship quarter-final.
In an interview with the Southern Star on Friday afternoon, Clancy confirmed that his time with the Leesiders has come to an end.
“The time has come for me to finish up my playing days with Cork,” the defender said.

“It has been a very difficult decision to make. I want to thank everyone who has helped me along the way since I was a Cork minor in 2010. My club Clonakilty, the Cork County Board, all the management and backroom teams I’ve come across over the years, and finally my family for their constant support.
“I want to wish John [Cleary], his backroom team, and all the players the best of luck for the coming year, and I look forward to cheering them on from the stands. To all the players and friendships I’ve made over the years, it has been an absolute pleasure and I will miss it so much.”
Clancy was recalled to the Cork senior football panel by Cleary in December 2022 after departing the panel for a short period. He played a key role in defence in Clonakilty's run to the Cork Premier SFC final in 2021 where they lost out to St Finbarr’s.
The news is a boost for the Brewery Town as they aim to win the Cork Premier SFC next year for the first time since 2009. After losing the final in 2021, they failed to qualify out of their respective group in the following season. Since then, Clon have made progress under manager Martin O'Brien, reaching the quarter-finals in 2023 and '24, but were beaten on both occasions by Nemo Rangers.
