The 70th staging of the blue ribbon trophy of the league’s season, the Mooney Cup, began in earnest last weekend with five first round ties being the highlights of an action packed fixture list.

The meeting of first division title contenders Here’s Health and Abbey Business at Mayfield Park certainly lived up to his billing as the pick of the ties. 

Having played each other twice in the league already and shared twelve goals, Abbey got down to business with two first half goals from David O’Regan and the evergreen John McLoughlin. 

Despite Ken O’Brien reducing the deficit on the hour, the visitors hung on with the assistance of a resolute back-four who were forced to defend in depth.

ePower won their first ever cup tie in style at Mayfield Park last Friday night, scoring once in the first 45 through Ryan Murray after eleven minutes, before going on to add two more in the second from Joshua Dempsey and Lachlan McCrea.

Second division Valley upstaged their higher ranked opponents Dripsey Celtic after going in from through Billy O’Connor in the 32nd minute. 

After Stephen O’Brien equalized early in the second half, sub Tom Hartnett popped up with the priceless winner with five minutes remaining.

Marvin Eknosuehi set up Victor Ewuzie in the 21st minute for what proved to be the match winner for the debutants.

Premier division Cork Hospitals eased into the second round at Camden courtesy of a first half hat-trick from Wymin Sivakumar and a fourth from captain Tadgh Whelan in the 37th minute.

Twenty-two places separated the teams ahead of their first ever cup meeting at Mayfield Park last Thursday night. 

Premier leaders Arc got down to business within six minutes of the kick-off. By the 23rd minute the visitors led six-nil through Paudie Cotter and Jack D’Arcy, two each, Dean Cummins and Conor Ryan. 

After Frankie Griffin pulled one back three minutes later, Cummins netted his second before half-time. 

Further goals from D’Arcy, Timothy Twomey, Dylan Cruise and an own goal stretched Rovers’s lead. 

The Tigers were rewarded for their endeavour to break on the counter when Arthur McDonagh netted a second with nine minutes remaining.

After a Timmy O’Reilly brace and an own goal had given first division Celtic a 3-1 lead over premier opponents Grangevale with twenty minutes remaining, goals from Aaron O’Sullivan and Dave Barrett took the tie to extra-time before Matias Ayala scored the winner in the 92nd minute. Lively winger Oleksandr Topolnyski had given the Vale a route back into the tie when he nicked his side’s first goal in the 67th minute.

The bottom two met at Mayfield Park last Sunday morning in a feisty encounter with rock bottom Marlboro sealing the precious three points courtesy of Daniel Jaouhari’s 81st minute winner. 

Earlier, Daniel Fernandez had put Trust ahead in the 35th minute before Adam O’Flynn levelled twelves minutes into the second half.

Grandon’s Toyota – Second Division:

Council inflicted a first defeat of the season on leaders DCT, scoring in each half through Cian Power and Daniel Brazil to give their title aspirations a huge boost. 

Goalkeeper David O’Donovan could only reduce the deficit in added time.

Grandon’s Toyota – Premier Division:

The LAB 0 

Helio Inter Cork 6

Helio moved three points clear of Arc Rovers at the top after a comprehensive win over a struggling LAB eleven in the late Sunday afternoon kick-off at Mayfield Park. 

The visitors made four substitutions before Ruben Sarasa opened the scoring in the 65th minute. 

Three goals inside six minutes from Erik Pohlmann, Javier Vidal Madrigal and Gabriel Cerini ended the tie as a contest.

Sarasa and Cerini added further goals in the last ten minutes to send Helio into next Sunday afternoon’s shield final against Martin Harvey Solicitors in confident mood.

DoMA Brazil Giants 2

Shield finalists MHS missed out on the chance to climb into the top half of the table at Ringmahon Park after Jordan O’Regan gave the hosts a 16th minute lead. 

DoMA sub Adriano showed twice in the last three minutes to secure a third win in ten for the visitors.
