Eoghan O’Shea was on song as Christian Brothers College were the only Cork school to record a win in the opening round of this year’s TUS Dr Harty Cup.

The Ballinhassig man scored 10 points, 0-3 from play, as Christians ran out 0-19 to 0-9 winners over Doon’s Scoil na Tríonóide Naofa in Group 1 at Glenroe, Limerick.

While the game had to be delayed due to CBC’s bus breaking down en route, the hold-up did not affect the Sidney Hill outfit and a good second quarter ensured that they led by 0-10 to 0-4 at half-time.

Aside from O’Shea, Christians could call on good displays from Jack Huggins and Rory Higgins with Jack Hegarty and Michael Quill on target too. A beauty from Michael Tadhg Brosnan helped to ensured that Christians stayed on top at the outset of the second half and, while Diarmuid Crowe’s frees ensured that the game did not completely go away from Doon, a strong Christians finish featured four straight points from O’Shea to rubber-stamp the victory.

In the other game in that group, John The Baptist CS of Hospital overcame Rice College of Ennis on a scoreline of 4-20 to 0-20, Diarmuid Hurley scoring 2-3 for the winners while Charlie Cronin weighed in with 1-2.

Aside from CBC, the other Cork school to avoid defeat were Midleton CBS, who shared 38 points evenly with champions Nenagh CBS in Group 4 at Ballyagran.

Midleton trailed by five points coming up to half-time – they had reduced the gap slightly, 0-12 to 0-8, by the interval – and they were still four behind with less than 10 minutes left but a strong finish secured a draw. Barry Walsh finished with nine points for the East Cork school, James O’Brien scoring three. St Francis College, Rochestown are the other entity in that three-team group.

In Group 2, where Coláiste Choilm shipped a loss to Templemore’s Our Lady’s Secondary School, Ardscoil Rís came out on top in their Limerick derby against Castletroy College. Patrick Kearney landed 1-14 as Ardscoil triumphed at Claughaun, while Eoin Begley also netted in a 2-26 to 2-16 win. Robert O’Farrell was responsible for 1-7 of the Castletroy total while Cillian Clifford got 1-2.

Charleville CBS were Cork’s only semi-finalists last year – they beat the reigning champions Cashel CS in a quarter-final to get there but Cashel turned the tables with a 3-15 to 0-18 Group 3 win at Ballyporeen. The victors’ goals came courtesy of Ryan O’Sullivan, Bríain O’Donoghue and Séamus Kennedy.

Also in Group 3, goals from Jack Twomey and Stephen Murphy helped Lismore’s Blackwater CS to get the better of Tulla’s St Joseph’s, 2-16 to 0-20 the final score in Kilmallock.

In Group 6, Euan Murray’s late equaliser earned Thurles CBS a draw with St Flannan’s College at Cappamore, the game finishing 2-21 each.
