NEWTOWN and Killeagh played out an entertaining Red FM SHL game at Newtownshandrum on Saturday evening with the home side too strong for their visitors, winning by seven points.

Both sides were short key players for a variety of reasons but that didn't take too much from the spectacle.

The home side started well with Jack Twomey pointing and Eoin O'Mahony followed with a third-minute goal.

Further pressure yielded points by Newtown's Robert Troy and a Mattie Ryan long-range free.

Dylan McCarthy opened the Imokilly side's tally from a free. McCarthy (2) frees, O'Mahony and Stephen Minihane exchanged points to leave it 1-5 to 0-3.

Impressive Ryan added another long-range free.

The winners had their second goal when John Geary worked well for Jack Twomey to hit the back of the net and leave it 2-6 to 0-3.

Another score from Troy and a McCarthy free had the winners ahead 2-7 to 0-4 and well in control of the game at this stage.

The home side added four more points before the break.

McCarthy and George Walsh-Wallace replied as Newtown led 2-11 to 0-6 at halftime.

Jack Twomey pointed a free on the resumption.

Walsh-Wallace and McCarthy added further points to close the gap to 10 points, 2-12 to 0-8.

Killeagh introduced three substitutes that made a big difference.

They held Newtown to a mere three points in the last 18 minutes.

Their points were scored by Twomey (2) and Kieran Murphy.

Killeagh lacked penetration up front but had six points in this period by Dylan McCarthy (four frees), David Buckley, and Cathal Fitzgibbon.

Best for Newtownshandrum were Mattie Ryan, Conor Twomey, Sean Griffin, Robert Troy, Stephen Minihane, Eoin O'Mahony and John Geary. For Killeagh, George Walsh-Wallace, Garry Leahy, David Buckley, Dylan McCarthy, Shane Smiddy, and Cathal Fitzgibbon did well.
