Lakewood Athletic proved way too strong for Mallow United with what was a very convincing performance in the Daly Industrial Supplies U17 League 1 encounter at Lakewood Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon.

The home side, Lakewood were dominant from the very first whistle, however, they only broke the deadlock in the 38th minute through Daniel Nolan to lead 1-0 at the break.

The pattern of the game didn’t change much in the second half and Lakewood increased their lead 2-0 eight minutes from the restart, when Karim Fonseca scored a spectacular overhead kick that flew into the roof of the net.

The floodgates then opened and they added five more goals through Nolan (2), Daniel Kirstein, Steven Holmes and Dara Holmes for a very comfortable victory.

Lakewood had the ball in the net in the second minute of the game, when Karim Fonseca danced his way into the box to square a superb pass to Daniel Nolan, however, his effort was ruled out for a tight offside decision.

Fonseca skill and trickery on the ball was causing the North Cork side all sorts of problems with his penetrating runs from the middle of the park and when he whipped in a delightful delivery in the 13th minute, Nolan saw his head crash off the crossbar.

The home side came close again ten minutes later when Fonseca cut in from the left to only see his powerful effort hit the side netting.

After another good passage of play by the home side in the 27th minute, Cillian Fitzgerald crossed a superb ball, but Adam O’Mahony powerful header hit the underside of the bar.

Lakewood eventually broke the deadlock to lead 1-0 nine minutes later, when Cillian Fitzgerald’s floated free kick found O’Mahony on the edge of the box and his square ball was finished by Nolan from close range.

The home side didn’t have to wait long from the restart to increase their lead 2-0, when Ethan Donovan floated in a dangerous free kick and Fonseca found space to send his outrageous overhead effort into the roof of the net.

They increase their lead in the 60th minute when substitute Stephen Holmes flicked Nolan’s corner into the top corner of the net.

It got worse for Mallow six minutes later when they found themselves 4-0 down, the hard working Nolan ran on to Daniel Kirstein through ball to coolly finish.

Lakewood were very clinical in this period and they increased their lead 5-0 in the 77th minute, when Nolan turned provider this time squaring the ball for Dara Holmes to finish from close range.

They increased their lead 6-0 in the 81st minute, when Kirstein broke from the middle of the park and his low powerful effort flew into the bottom corner of the net.

To be fair to the Mallow players they never dropped their heads and kept working hard, however, they conceded again three minutes later to trail 7-0.

Lakewood’s Kirstein put a lovely ball over the top for Nolan to run on to and his calmly slotted home to grab his hat-trick, which was a reward for all his hard work throughout the game.

The score line might be a little harsh for the Mallow boys, however, they came up against a team that were in bang on form on the day.
