WHILE 2023 ended in heartache for members of Mayfield United football with the passing of Jamie Wool, the club promises to honour his legacy by ensuring Mayfield United is a club for the community.
Jamie passed away suddenly during a charity game held at the club on St Stephen's Day, a death that hit a lot of people throughout the footballing community in Cork and further afield. He had been heavily involved in the club and his passing has left a huge void.
Vice-chairman Keith Buckley expressed his sadness in the loss of the club's dear friend and stated their wishes to carry on Jamie's legacy in the coming season.
"There are no words to express how saddened we all were at the sudden passing of Jamie," said Buckley.

"His passing is evidently felt right through the community. He was a brilliant character full of the joys of life, loved having a good time, always a smile on his face and the stories told since his passing have showcased all of this.
"From a club point of view, his son Jayden who plays with our U12 A team was always glued to his hip whether it was playing or watching matches and Jamie loved him so much as he did his whole family.
"Jamie was a committee member, a player, a coach, sponsor and a dear friend to us all at Mayfield United AFC.
"We are thinking of Majella, his kids especially club player Jayden and all the family at this very difficult time.
The memories of Jamie will stay with us and our club forever and we will do our utmost to ensure his legacy lives on within the club.
"On the day of his passing, Jamie was partaking in a memorial charity game in aid of local organisation COPE Foundation. The game is an annual soccer match for past players of the club in memory of two dear deceased members of ours Kevin O'Mahony and Tony Byrne. We vary the recipient of these donations from year to year to different local charities/organisations."
Jamie was always willing to give his time to help others.
"For the tragic event to happen, it was very difficult for us all to comprehend, really heartbreaking. I would like to thank the individuals who were first to Jamie’s aid on the day who were participating in the charity event. They know who they are.!
I would also like to thank the first responders and emergency services on the day also who were top-class.
"The football community have really supported the club and we would like to thank every club and organisation who have reached out with condolences. It's at the most difficult times when you really see the good in people and we as a club appreciate all the support we have got.
"It was recently said that Mayfield Utd will always be there. They will be there for anyone in the community or past members no matter who leaves for whatever reason and I’d love to echo that. The facilities we have are second to none in Cork and we have big plans to enhance these."

He was a big part of this development committee and they aspire to complete his dreams and plans.
"The community spirit in Mayfield was truly felt in the hours, days and weeks since Jamie’s passing and that will drive our committee, coaches, players and members for some time to come.

"2024 has started in a bit of a haze with the traumatic Christmas period for the club. We had an executive meeting recently and our aim for 2024 is to honour Jamie’s legacy by making Mayfield United a club for the community in his honour. This will be done in all aspects, including coaching, clubhouse development, grounds development and so on.
"We have approximately 200 members and it will be up to us to drive the club forward in the way Jamie would have done so. So while we are all hurting at the moment, Jamie will always be in our thoughts and he will be a key driving force in the future development and progression of our great club."
