Munster Senior League: Jason Abbott set to take over Cobh Wanderers as player/manager
Cobh Ramblers' Jason Abbott shoots past Dundalk's Aodh Dervin, during their SSE Airtricity League Division 1 clash at St Colman's Park.
Cobh Ramblers club legend Jason Abbott is set to become the new player/manager of Cobh Wanderers, with the midfielder stepping away from St Colman’s Park this summer.
The announcement was made on social media by Cobh Wanderers after weeks of speculation around the Great Island.
Abbott will depart the Rams midway through their campaign, with the club fourth in the table and in possession of a six point cushion in the play-off places under new manager Fran Rockett.
“The club are delighted to announce Jason Abbott as our new player/head coach for the coming season,” the statement read.
“Jason brings with him a wealth of experience from the League of Ireland with Ramblers and the Munster Senior League with UCC and of course the Wanderers.
"Jason is a hugely enthusiastic young coach with big ambitions for himself and the club going forward.
“Jason is of course from a family steeped in Cobh footballing history and he is determined to write another chapter here in our club.
"We wish Jason and his management team, along with the players, every success next season and beyond.
"We would encourage our fans to get behind all the lads from the start of the season.”
The former Republic of Ireland underage international will take over a Wanderers side that were relegated last year from the Munster Senior League Premier Division after finishing bottom.
The club picked up just twelve points all season, and they went down alongside UCC and an Avondale United side that lost out to Blarney in the play-offs.
Wanderers were also knocked out of the Beamish Stout Senior Cup by Second Division side Crosshaven, a huge shock with the result incurred at Old Church Park on the Great Island.
The FAI Intermediate Cup has offered some form of solace, as the club have reached the quarter finals following victories over Everton, Skerries Town, and Wayside Celtic.
This was done with a squad that includes former Cobh Ramblers players Ciaran Griffin, Darragh Burke, Colin Henderson, and Nathan O’Connell.
Abbott will take over Wanderers after a career that included an Under-19 league and cup double with Cork City under Stuart Ashton.
The midfielder is best known for his performances in claret and blue, where he featured in four promotion pushes at St. Colman’s Park.
Abbott has also collected four Munster Senior League winners medals, starting with the club’s victory over Rockmount at Turner’s Cross in 2016.
The same opposition were downed in 2025, during a year that would see a push for automatic promotion fall short in the final few weeks of the season under Mick McDermott and Richie Holland.
The Ramblers bounced back and are once again challenging, this time through the play-offs under Rockett.
