NEMO RANGERS footballer Luke Connolly has been forced to retire due to a persistent knee injury, aged 31.

The gifted forward was one of the most consistent club players in the Rebel county for many years since he made his debut for Nemo at first-team level back in 2011.

During his club career, Connolly won five top-flight football championships and two Munster crowns.

In 2022, the sharpshooter was at his brilliant best when he helped the Trabeg-based outfit to Andy Scannell glory for the 23rd time in the club’s 100th year in existence. Nemo outfought southside rivals St Finbarr’s, who were reigning champions, in the final on a scoreline of 1-16 to 2-9.

Connolly shone in the famous win, causing the Barrs rearguard untold problems throughout, as he finished up with eight points, five coming from frees. It was fitting that he was also captain.

Connolly first came to prominence when he won a Corn Uí Mhuirí medal with his school Coláiste Chríost Rí back in 2011, which is the last time a Cork school won the competition. He kicked nine points, five frees and two 45s, as the Cork side defeated Kerry’s Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne in the final, 1-12 to 1-7.

Three years later, Connolly was an integral part of the UCC team that won the Sigerson Cup. He lined out at centre-forward in the 0-10 to 0-9 win over Ulster University in the decider. Connolly chipped in with a point that evening in Belfast.

REBEL

Connolly also wore the Cork jersey with distinction, playing for the Rebels at minor, U21 and senior level. He won a Munster minor championship medal in 2010 and two U21 provincial crowns in 2012 and 2013.

He was added to the Cork senior training panel before the start of the 2015 National League under the management of Brian Cuthbert. The forward made his first appearance for the team on Sunday, February 1, when he came on as a sub in the 1-15 to 0-16 success over Dublin in the opening round of the Division 1 league in Páirc Uí Rinn.

In 2017, under Peadar Healy, Connolly started at full-forward in the Munster final against Kerry in Killarney, where he kicked two points, one coming from a free, as the Leesiders lost 1-23 to 0-15.

Connolly was part of the team that gained promotion from the Division 3 league in 2020.

His last appearance at inter-county level came in January 2022 when he was introduced for the second half in the McGrath Cup final defeat to Kerry, as it finished up 2-17 to 0-11 in Killarney.

The news is a big blow to new Nemo football manager Robbie O’Dwyer, as the team in black and green look to win back the Andy Scannell Cup after being denied back-to-back titles last year after losing to Castlehaven in the final. The city side are drawn with Ballincollig, Éire Óg and Newcestown in the 2024 Premier SFC group stage.
