THE Rebel Óg monthly award winners for October are Glen Rovers and Killeagh.

They are being honoured for their wins in the Premier 1 and 2 minor hurling championships, with Killeagh retaining their title at P2 level.

Both sides had similar patterns, recovering from first-round losses in the round-robin stages, before going on a run that eventually saw them emerge as champions.

Having lost to Inniscarra the Glen then defeated Youghal and Douglas in the group stages to go through to the knockout stages.

A second meeting in the quarter-final with Inniscarra saw them reverse their first-round result as they went on to face Midleton in the semi-final.

Another tough game but they came through to reach the decider where they were simply too strong for Douglas on the night, with Diarmuid Wall inspiring them to a 4-11 to 3-7 win.

In the Premier 2 competition, St Finbarr’s got the better of Killeagh in round one, before wins over Na Piarsaigh, Charleville and Carrigtwohill helped them reach the semi-final.

Along the way, they also drew with Shandrum so they knew the final was going to be a tough encounter, before they emerged winners by 1-25 to 2-17, with Barry Walsh leading by example.

Michael O’Mahony, chairman of Rebel Óg congratulated both sides on their wins and said it was a testament to a lot of hard work being done at underage level at both clubs.

He said with the change of age of the minor grade to U18 next season they now have a chance to go on and retain their titles and no doubt they will be determined to do so.

Echoing his words Michael Evans, chair of the judging panel also said a lot of you are involved with college games at the moment and no matter which one it is he wished them the best of luck and said that these games play a vital role in the development of young players.
