Village United booked their spot in the semi-final of the Mossie Linnane league cup after a 2-1 victory over City Wanderers at the MTU.

We saw some big performances from both Gavin Cummins in goal along with his brother Gavin at left full to ensure Village came out on top against Wanderers’ pressure in the second half.

With just minutes in, a chance fell for the hosts when Morales found Pont free near the edge of the box, but he steered his effort wide.

And after Adrian Morea dealt with Anthony Kiniry’s stinging effort, Juan Pont wasted a chance at the other end again when he headed wide from Ranzan’s cross.

With the tie flowing now, Eric Marah used neat control before drilling straight at Cummins.

But, slack defending accorded Village the chance to nose in front when Anthony Kiniry found a way through before rifling into the bottom corner on 17 minutes.

Kiniry had a half chance again minutes later, but after controlling from Graham Cummins’ low cross, he fired straight at Mahea.

Conor Nyhan then snatched on to a loose ball before steering straight at Cummins.

And when an opportunity arrived for James Barry in the box, it took a top-drawer tackle from James O’Sullivan to save the day.

At the other end, Juan Pont won the race for possession over Gavin Cummins, but wasted his opportunity when he hooked over an unprotected goal.

The last action in the half then saw Kiniry’s turn and strike go straight at Mahea.

With just minutes into the second period, a terrific chance fell for Village, but Colin Hickey could not force his effort past Mahea from a narrow angle.

A chance then fell for Wanderers when Marah threaded one through for Morales, but he failed to beat Cummins as Wanderers started to up the gears.

But as the hosts started to press their opponents back, Village had a great chance when from the break, Kiniry found Long with an accurate cross – only to see him head past a gaping target.

Then, following a considerable amount of pressure from Wanderers, Colin Hickey stole in to side-foot his effort home and double his side’s advantage.

Wanderers managed to find a way back into the contest when Eric Marah fired home from the spot, but despite efforts that saw Gavin Cummins produce some decent stops as well as Graham Cummins clearing off the line, Village held on in the end to claim victory.
