CORK'S own Tommy the Governor Hyde beat the tough Mexican fighter Abraham Hernandez by unanimous decision in front of his loyal supporters in a Super Middleweight fight in a Siam Warriors event at the Gurranabraher Credit Union Arena last Saturday night.

It was a cagey start to the main event with both boxers feeling one another out.

However, the Governor left his hands fly midway through the round and hurt his opponent sending him back into the ropes.

He finished the round with a combination of shots and rocked the Mexican with a powerful right hook right on the bell.

Hyde started the second round again on the front foot and caught Hernandez with a lovely right to the head rolled by two body shots. The Mexican did catch Hyde with a lovely left to the side of the head, however, the Cork man responded with a flurry of shots as he was ready imposing himself on Hernandez.

Hyde looked impressive in the opening rounds as his opponent was trying to hold him at every opportunity, however, Hyde used his jab to keep him at bay and caught the Mexican with a powerful right hand midway through the third round.

The one thing that impressed me with Hyde in this fight was his patience and composure as he wasn’t diving in for the big shot, however he caught the Mexican with two vicious right hooks that had the large crowd in raptures.

Hyde went to work again at the start of the fifth round with some nice combinations and had his man in all sorts of trouble.

The Governor kept the pressure on his opponent cutting him above his left eye and to be honest I was surprised the Mexican survived the round.

Hyde continued to pile on the pressure in the final round and continued to pick his opponent off at will, however, as he will have learnt a lot in these six rounds against a slippery and tough opponent will stand to him going forward.

Earlier in the night another local lad Cathal Crowley fought a very tough Polish boxer Alexsander Nagolski in another Super Middleweight fight.

He put in on his best performance to date by knocking his man in the second round.

Crowley was relentless from their first bell and had his opponent in all sorts of trouble.

He suffered a nasty cut to his eye early in the second round, however he knocked Nagolski down with a vicious right hook a few seconds later.

Crowley then pounced on his opponent as soon as he got to his feet and with a flurry of powerful punches he knocked Nagolski down again, but this time he didn’t recover for Cathal his third victory with two coming by way of knockout to stay unbeaten.

Mitchelstown native Danny Keating extended his unbeaten record to 8 and 0 when he beat another Polish fighter Joyob Laskoeski by unanimous decision in a Welterweight bout.

Keating is a very stylish and a composed fighter and his class really shone through on the night, although his opponent gave him a very hard six rounds of boxing which will be a good learning curve for him.

Dannyboy as he is known is a serious fighter and gave a exhibition of boxing on the night with a really powerful display and he has a really bright future ahead of him.
