AGHADA corner-forward Charlie Terry was delighted to play his part in helping his side secure a five-point win against Youghal following their PIHC first-round clash played in Killeagh last Sunday.

The Aghada captain helped lead his side to a deserved win on a final scoreline of 1-19 to 2-11 following their entertaining local derby clash.

“It was a great win. We had a good win in the football championship last weekend and it was great to build on that. We are looking forward to playing Carrigaline in the next round. This win helps maintain momentum and establishes a winning mentality within the club."

Aghada produced a strong performance in the closing stages.

“We knew coming into the game that Youghal would provide a still challenge. They are a very good side. They were playing senior hurling up until very recently.

"They have a lot of fine players. Bill Cooper is a great player for Cork. We knew we would have to play to our best to defeat them. We produced a great finish. Our lads kept battling and finished very strongly.”

Terry is relishing the responsibility as captain.

“It is a great honour. I was thrilled when I was asked to captain Aghada by the selectors. One of my best friends is the vice-captain. We are working well together. We have a squad full of leaders. It is always a proud moment to lead this team out.”

Will Leahy in particular produced a great display for Aghada: the ace center-forward scored 12 points.

“He is a great talent. He is so accurate from frees. He is an excellent hurler. He trains hard. He is down on the pitch seven nights a week. He is a big player for us.”

Another player to impress was half-forward John Looney who netted a great goal just before the interval.

“He is a very talented player. He played with the Cork minors. He is coming back from a bad injury. Hopefully he can stay fit and help us achieve our goals this year. He is another big player for us. We have a very strong squad this year. Competition for places is very intense.”
