More than 40,000 bottles and cans have been recycled by Cork College of FET’s Bishopstown campus through the ReTurn Scheme for local charities.

They have raised more than €6,500 in little over a year from the recycling of bottles and cans at the canteen in the college, with funds raised benefitting a range of local charities including, Bishopstown Tidy Towns, the Marvel Club and Cork City Hospitals Children’s Club.

Valerie Cowman, campus leader, praised everyone who was involved in the project.

“Learners and staff deserve great credit for participating in a scheme that has the twin effect of reducing waste and helping charity organisation with their fundraising.

“I would like to especially thank the green committee for their efforts to date.

“This scheme illustrates the value of the circular economy, forms part of campus sustainability goals and contributes to various communities in need of support.”

Chairperson of Cork City Hospital Children’s club John Looney said all with the organisation are hugely appreciative of the fundraising efforts of those from the college.

“Being included in the Cork ETB Return Scheme is one of many support initiatives our volunteers need to generate the €140,000 required annually to make sick and deserving children’s dreams come through and we are thankful to be involved.”

Morgan O’Mahony of the Marvel Club added that the funds raised via Bishopstown Campus enable them to support over 100 families, through camps for children and young people with additional needs held at Easter, Halloween, Christmas and during the summer.

“The Marvel Club is not just a club, it’s a support system and social outlet that improves quality of life for the members and their families.

“Funds from the scheme help us to do just that.”
