A production of Stef Smiths critically acclaimed Girl in the Machine is set to come to the Cork Arts Theatre next month.
The show centres around overworked corporate lawyer Polly, whose boyfriend Owen presents her with a newly released headset, Black Box, to help her relax, and she becomes addicted to the virtual world.
Outside, civil protests grow as the population rebels against the new technology and its increasing hold on human life.
As the future of man and machine become intertwined, Polly and Owen are forced to confront what it means to be human and whether they share the same understanding.
Director Éadaoin Fox said: “This prescient text acts as a conduit of resistance when confronted with the promise of a convenient and ‘blissful’ reality offered by AI.”
Starring Isolde Fenton as Polly and Stefan Brennan-Healy as Owen, the production opens on Thursday, November 12, and runs until Saturday, November 21, with performances nightly at 8pm and Saturday matinees.
