Cork, Kerry and Waterford are facing a status orange rain warning as Storm Austen is set to bring heavy rain and localised flooding from Thursday night.

Met Éireann issued the warning on Wednesday, with intense rainfall expected to cause disruption and delays to public transport, flooding and very difficult travelling conditions.

The warning for Cork, Kerry and Waterford will come into effect at 10pm on Thursday and remain in place until 5am on Friday.

A separate status orange rain warning has been issued for Dublin, Wexford and Wicklow, taking effect at 2am on Friday and remaining in place until 8am.

Nationwide yellow warning

A status yellow wind and rain warning will also be in effect across all counties from 7pm on Thursday until 10am on Friday.

Heavy rain associated with Storm Austen will spread eastwards across the country during this period, with potential impacts including difficult travelling conditions, localised flooding and disruption to outdoor events.

Strong easterly winds will turn northwesterly and strengthen further, particularly in the south and southeast.

The unsettled weather could also displace debris and loose objects, while some trees and branches may fall.

Weekend weather outlook

Met Éireann said Saturday would also be wet and windy early on, with spells of heavy rain becoming more showery as the day progresses.

Fresh to strong and gusty south to southwesterly winds are expected, reaching gale force in some Atlantic areas.

It will be more humid than in recent days, with highest temperatures of 12C to 16C.

During Saturday night, some thundery showers will affect the north and west, with the odd heavy shower reaching further east.

Lowest temperatures of 6C to 9C are expected.

Status orange marine warning

A status orange marine storm warning for the area from Wicklow Head to Dungarvan to Valentia, and in the Irish Sea south of Anglesey, will come into effect at 9pm on Thursday and remain in place until 7am on Friday.

Met Éireann said north to northwesterly winds associated with Storm Austen would reach storm force 10 at times.
