Met Éireann has advised that Wednesday will begin rather wet and windy.

The national forecaster said sunny spells and some heavy scattered showers will follow from the west this evening.

It will be a blustery day, with fresh to strong, gusty northwest winds.

Highest temperatures of 9C to 13C are expected.

Scattered outbreaks of thundery rain with isolated thunderstorms will occur early tonight, clearing northeastwards before morning.

Drier, clearer but colder weather will follow later, with lowest temperatures of 0C to 7C.

It will be coldest away from west and southwest coasts; all in a light southwest or variable breeze.

Traffic

Traffic is slowly starting to build across some of Cork's major city links, with increased flows along the M28, the N40, and beyond the Jack Lynch Tunnel.

National outlook

Tomorrow will start off mostly dry with sunny spells, before very heavy rain will develop in the southwest.

The rain will extend northeastwards during the evening hours, with the possibility of localised flooding in Munster and Leinster.

There will be light to moderate east to northeast winds as tomorrow evening is expected to be very wet and windy across southern counties.

Highest temperatures of 10C to 14C.

Tomorrow night will be extremely wet and windy, and potentially stormy in the southeast.

A nationwide status yellow rain warning comes into effect at 7pm and will remain in place until 8am on Friday.

Widespread heavy and persistent rain will affect much of the country with some flooding expected.

Isolated thunderstorms will occur too with cyclonic variable winds veering northwest overnight.

Lowest temperatures of 5C to 8C are expected.

On Friday, lingering wet and windy weather will clear eastern counties by around mid-morning.

Sunshine and well scattered blustery showers elsewhere will follow for the rest of the day, mainly affecting western counties.

Highest temperatures of 9C to 13C are expected.

Fresh and gusty northwest winds will moderate before evening.

Friday night will be largely dry and clear early on. However, wet and rather windy weather is expected to move in from the west later in the night.

Lowest temperatures of 3C to 8C are predicted, with strong and gusty winds near the south and west coasts.

Met Éireann has said Saturday will also be rather wet and windy early on with spells of heavy rain, turning more showery through the day.

Fresh to strong and gusty south to southwest winds, will reach gale force in some Atlantic areas.

It will be more humid than recent days with highest temperatures of 12C to 16C.

During Saturday night, some thundery showers will affect the north and west with the odd heavy shower arriving further east.

Lowest temperatures of 6C to 9C degrees are expected.

Sunday will be a cool breezy day with sunshine and showers, some heavy, especially in the west and north.

Highest temperatures of 9C to 12C are expected.

Sunday night will be largely dry with clear spells.

Some areas will see mist and fog form though, with lowest temperatures of 4C to 8C.
