Housing charity Threshold has prevented more than 400 Cork households from entering homelessness so far in 2026.
It comes as a new record for homelessness in Cork was set recently, with latest government data showing that a total of 851 adults were in emergency accommodation in August, up more than 28% on the August 2025 figure.
Threshold has supported 2,574 Cork households since January 2026, of which 1,527 were at risk of homelessness.
Some 419 households have been directly prevented from entering homelessness with the help of the charity.
Nearly half of the Cork people who contacted Threshold did so after receiving a tenancy termination notice, while the next most common reasons for getting in touch was difficulties accessing social housing.
It comes as Threshold launched its annual ‘Own Your Rights’ campaign, aimed at advising renters about their rights and the supports available through the charity’s free advice service.
Threshold’s campaigns officer, Cat Clark, said: “With continued pressures in the private rental market, it is more important than ever that renters understand their rights, know where to turn for advice, and feel confident seeking support when they need it.
“We encourage all renters in Cork to reach out to our team of advisers with any questions they may have,” said Ms Clark. “Our free advice service is here to provide practical support and guidance, whether someone is contacting Threshold for the first time or has spoken to us before. We want renters to know they are not alone.”
The charity has created a series of podcast episodes hosted by housing advisor Iris Munkki, which answer frequently asked questions renters have for Threshold advisers.
It is available on Spotify and Apple platforms. Threshold’s helpline is open Monday to Friday, 9am-9pm at 1800 454 454, with webchat at www.threshold.ie/get-help/ for any renter in need of advice or support.
